I didn't feel like I was the intended audience for SpecOps so I felt kind of detached from what it was trying to do. Generally speaking when I play narrative video games I don't really "see myself" in the protagonist so much as I participate in the retelling of a story.

Skip to about 3:50. He sometimes used things like broken guitars, household items you'd find repurposed as potential instruments in the apocalypse, and seldom heard or mixed instruments to convey the idea of disparate pieces having to come together.

Thanks, that was a pro click. I had no idea Gustavo went that far with composing the first game’s music but it makes a ton of sense in retrospect.

Agreed, the gameplay comes together in higher difficulty settings. Your inventory becomes very tight and being stealthy + running away from fights is no longer optional.

Hard with most of the UI turned off and Grounded are some of the most fun I've had in a third person shooter. The game's systems work incredibly well at forcing you to stretch out incredibly limited resources and your toolset without actually being unfair.

TLOU also doesn't tell you massive amounts of stuff, like that bottles make more noise than bricks, that having a brick in hand can let you stealth kill a Clicker, etc. Most modern games would have a popup about every single one of those things

Maybe this is what the next Battlefield or Call of Duty game need. Playing through most of it with bad aim, 3 bullets, a glass bottle and a brick. Also encourage you to trade the bullets for food to add a bit of Pathologic to the formula.

Gustavo fuckin' owns and honestly it looks like that E3 performance is gonna be the best thing to emerge from the sequel, smh at all the people on streams at that time going "who is this old dude"

joel can be both a monsterous person and humanised, thats the point of the games writing and why the writing isnt garbage: it manages to do exactly that very well.

Spec Ops has always felt to me like a game that was meant to be played by someone else.

If you are the kind of person who loves post-modern twists in games, an apparently mid shelf shoot mans isn't high on your list in the year of Dishonored, Journey, Mass Effect, X-Com, Dear Esther etc. So someone has to tell you "no, it's good actually" and then vaguely spoil the twist to get you to play.

If you are a shootmans fan who can't get enough of shootmans, maybe you play the game after getting done with Battlefield 3, Halo 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

I think the main function of the game was for self-superior people in the first camp imagining people in the second camp playing the game and having their minds blown.

It's good that they kept the passive companions at least - because having to babysit them in a game like this would've been a nightmare.

But hey, at least it isn't the stealth stuff from Uncharted 4. Just thinking of it makes me wonder if TLOU2 is gonna be even worse in that regard.

Replaying TLOU, I hope they do away with the magic listening ability, if only because it reveals enemies appearing out of thin air constantly. Why give me the ability to count and track every enemy in this combat arena if seven more appear and aggro on me when I cross some invisible line that triggers the next scripted sequence?

The posts about taking the story out of a game are pretty disingenuous, you can't play spec ops without the story the same way that playing an rpg without story is just some rando killing animals for 40 hours.

I thought the last of us had a decent story, and the complaint about ellie being invisible to enemies is fine. I'd take that over brothers in arms for example where they'll happily stand in the open and get completely merked.

On a related note, you seem to be putting words into my mouth when you say "garbage" straight out of a marvel movie. It's really hard to respond to arguments when people are inventing their own!

The marvel movie soundtracks aren't actively bad. They're extremely forgettable and generic. Which describes TLoU's soundtrack pretty well. It's not bad, but picking random of snippets of music isn't going to make people go "Ahh, the Last of Us soundtrack!" as much as a lot of really memorable pieces.

Like everything else I've said, you can disagree. I know it's a big Gamer things to take critique of something people like as a personal attack, but it's really not. If you like it, that's cool. Personally, I've played a lot of games and heard a lot of game music and TLoU's soundtrack just doesn't have character to it.

I'm reading about this Neil Druckmann guy and he sounds kind of cool? I mean, Nadine was the best part about Uncharted 4 for me and the stories that I am reading about him trying his best to include more women characters that kind of go against gamer wants is awesome.

I have not read about any of this.

Uncharted 4 was in 2016 my dude. Not everyone needs to have the same perspective as you, and for me, some of it is personal because I have run into quite a few toxic racist gamers. I also see some of that bullshit swelling up with this game.

No it's not, the game calls itself The Last Of Us and takes for its theme the extinction of the human species through zombie apocalypse, the title and more importantly the game both claim that humans are in short supply.

Then you fight a half million clones with different shirts including a set piece where they launch a human wave attack on you. Metro 2032, in the same genre, has a war between two factions that is basically a trench war without artillery, that war bleeds all factions involved almost to death.




Also I remember plenty of bad books, games and movies that I hated, that's not particularly odd, especially for high profile ones, look at this fucker who can poo poo talk the star wars prequels, he's got to have liked them, clearly left a strong impression. Well, now that you remind me, perhaps, because of the hype around it, and it wasn't for the best.

The question is why don't the devs jump on the opportunity instead of making them generic mooks, guards in a deus ex game have more individuality, also why do the bandits just assault two fuckers over and over again and die again and again for a gain of nil and a maximum gain of almost nil instead of just not getting themselves killed? Pretty odd behaviour for a humanity of survivors.

The game is tackling themes of human civilization ending and tribalism. The titular "Last of Us" can still be millions of people trying to eke out an existence in that civilizational ruin - that is the vision behind the game and debating whether that meaning of "Last of Us" is valid is pedantic nonsense.

agreed its extremely unrealistic, might as well make up a group of humans who during a global pandemic completely refuse to take protective measures and protest in favor of doing things that will objectively make things worse and cause people to get sick and die. it would be unbelievable that humans would act in such a pointless and thoughtless way.
