r/loveforlandlords is some wild poo poo. I can’t tell if it’s making fun of landlords or if it’s landlords having fun by posting exaggerated edgy poo poo that they’re kind of on board with but know would be unacceptable to say out loud. It’s probably both isn’t it.

not sure how doing free labor for a private company, which is used to replace workers, is Morally Correct. i almost always put it back but i feel like a sucker, the grocery store is exploiting your desire to not be an rear end in a top hat to allow them to hire less workers, essentially.

I know it's hellworld and always assume we're getting hosed over, but I genuinely think the primary purpose of cart returns is so that people will put their carts there instead of leaving them in parking spaces and making it harder for future customers to park. Even back before cart returns, it's not like stores had somebody in the parking lot all the time to grab carts as soon as they became abandoned. They always would send someone out periodically. And now if they're getting them from the cart return instead of from all over, that doesn't seem like a huge reduction in labor for the store. Just a reduction in pain in the rear end for the employee and people trying to park

The problem is people are compelled to take physically demanding unskilled labor jobs because they're forced to pay rent and buy food and other things they have to have to live. Demanding more humans fill the role of cart return doesn't make things better, it's the same poo poo as Walmart getting praised for hiring seniors to stand for hours at the front of the doors greeting customers. Pushing your cart from your car to the return likely is less than 30 feet round trip of walking for the individual, instead having one or more employees run all over a parking lot all day sounds like a poo poo view on progress for workers. We should be either be providing jobs that have a meaningful impact on society or be providing all basic needs for someone so unskilled they can't get a job to support themselves.

I understand this point but I also think that in the absence of something better the busywork jobs make sense. Like let’s fix the structural problems before we automate and outsource away all the jobs. Businesses can get by. I live in one of the last states to still mandate full service gas and it provides a ton of people with income. I don’t see what benefit getting rid of it would have in the absence of an actual social safety net. I’m sure all the gas stations would love to repeal it because they’re forced to pay people $15/hour and staff twice as many people as they usually would but it’s not like gas is any more expensive here than in Washington so it can’t be hurting their margins that badly

We should be either be providing jobs that have a meaningful impact on society or be providing all basic needs for someone so unskilled they can't get a job to support themselves. in a socialist society, absolutely. in a capitalist society, having less workers is more profit going to the capitalists, higher unemployment, lower wages and thats it. and yes, this works because for the individual customer it is not a large amount of labor, but over the course of the day and thousands of customers it actually is a substantial amount that could employ workers. instead the customers are doing free labor for the company, and paying them for the privilege. pumping gas is a minor amount of work, yet there is a reason where it is still legally required to be done by attendants it is defended by unions and labor activists. this is not that big of an issue, but it is indicative of a bad thing, and i was just disagreeing with the dumb 4chan post that it was some absolute black and white thing.
