Ghost in the Shell / Cyberpunk / Blade Runner Basically anything about corporation ruled societies and potentially cybernetic implants and augmentations. Already with the rise of the international corporations that national governments have issues controlling because of lack of jurisdiction and the lack of international governance we can see this happening from the societal standpoint. In a way modern corporations already outgrew governments and that is what worries me. The augmentation part still has to be proven even possible but I could see it happening. Still if that was an option I would probably be down to get me some augs.

It did happen, but the question is are we going to just become desensitized since the change is progressive and slow? When I look at the pictures of my hometown after the war I am often shocked how much has changed since then without me ever really paying much attention. Overpopulation is a real thing and might actually lead to mega regions (it's all a matter of perspective really, New York already kind of fits the bill considering its size. Have in mind though that I am European and the biggest city I lived in had measly 1 million people) Source: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2010/mar/22/un-cities-mega-regions (I am full aware that Guardian is clickbait-y but I am using it just for some of the stats) For the augs, I am inclined to agree, but merging with technology is happening daily (there are some developments in the microchip implant area that might make us more easily identifiable and enable us to pay in stores etc without actually having to carry credit or ID cards). Actually some of the most modern implants and replacement limbs are interfaced with the nerves of the wearer to enable him to basically use the replacement limb almost as it was his real limb. It's not perfect but it enables many people to live at least a bit better life with prosthetics. Those limbs are potentially stronger and more durable. The question is what happens when they become better? I don't think that we are plummeting towards this future at the breakneck speed, but it's certainly a possibility with the general direction the world is moving in. Also, I must agree that corpos of today would never accept the darker connotations and the dark image that their cyberpunk counterparts give off. PR is a strong tool, no matter what shady practices they might be involved in. Also, no flying cars. Sorry for the big response. I enjoy the interactions here so I wanted to at least broaden my perspective in a respectful way.

It'll be like Blade Runner without any of the cool stuff for a bit, gradually becoming like Mad Max Fury Road without the cars or people.

By some estimates we will hit peak humans around 2040-2050, possibly sooner. The future of the human race isn't mega arcologies teeming with people unless there are dramatic and long term shifts in reproduction rates. So my pick for future that film where the old guy tries to convince his helper robot to rob people

There's an Isaac Asimov where there's four computers everyone trusts implicitly who run the world and one of his regular characters investigates an error and finds out the computers were lying about small little things to maintain order. Perhaps our computers at google are lying to the employees about being able to calculate quantum physics and will begin making up imaginary facts

Is there a cyberpunk with a more suburban setting? Everywhere is Manhattan in pretty much all cyberpunk fiction it seems like. Dredd (2012) but its also the Trailer Park Boys. I could see that being real

I'm not going to dispute the superficial resemblance of reality to Idiocracy, but I can't hear that moivies name and not kneejerk rant about how much I hate the premise of that movie. The whole poo poo about humanity as a whole becoming less intelligent because 'that trailer trash wont stop makin' more kids while poor smart upper middle class people get worked to the bone and only have one kid' is just frothing disdain for poor people with no opportunities built on the lie that intelligence is being educated and just completely not understanding how evolution works. Like, education and intelligence are different things! Success in education is predicated on wealth and race and gender, plus all the second order effects from those things, and then probably the loving zodiac before intelligence has an impact. I say this as an idiot with a degree that people think sounds like a smart person thing, but was mostly just a lot of work. Work that I was able to do because I had financial support, family support and pressure to get a secondary education, and because no one ever questioned that a white dude belonged in an engineering department. I certainly didn't inherit smart genes from my parents, amply demonstrated by both the fact that they're dumb enough to believe Idiocracy's premise, and the fact that I was dumb enough to enlist in the military. I vaguely remember that I used to have an evolutionary biology part of this rant about how the trailer park guy with multiple kids from multiple partners has more diverse progeny with greater possibilities for beneficial gene combinations than the monogamous couple, but I don't remember enough of it to make it clearly. Something about a zillion different genes being weakly linked to intelligence. In any case, the better biology based criticism is that (tell me if I'm wrong here) the leading hypotheses about things that lead to intelligence are bigger social groups and metacognitive behaviors like lying. And that guy in the trailer park absolutely owns bones at both of those in that dumb goddamn montage. He interacts with way more people, is able to form a substantial number of relationships intimate enough to be sexual, and he clearly exhibits dishonest behaviors. If aliens showed up out of nowhere my money is 100% on them making human-alien hybrids with the trailer park guy because hes the most intelligent, which I believe will be supported by my future research on the distribution of UFO sightings by average number of sexual partners by zip code (pending 2020 census). In short, the premise of the movie Idiocracy is clearly being narrated by the dumbest person in the stupid future. Also if you're a creepy IT guy lamenting that humanity is gonna get dumb because no one will have sex with you, please stop starting conversations with me about idiocracy tia
