curtadams posted:

Having adopted a kid, I am irritated at how easy it's portrayed in comics. Even the smoothest adoptions, at least past early infancy, are usually pretty traumatic for the children and often the adoptive parents as well. Johnny of Rex Morgan is a prime example. His mom left him with the Morgans and went off to die. For real children, even toddlers, losing a parent for any reason is very traumatic but he's basically unfazed and calling June Morgan "Mommy" after a few weeks. A much more likely outcome would be that he'd be heartbroken for years until he was old enough to forget his mom, and even then he'd likely carry abandonment/fear of death/etc. issues much or all of his life. I get that, at least in-strip, the Morgans are supposed to be great people and parents, but no amount of good treatment can fill the void of the person you love most in the world dying.

And, yeah, they blitz over the legal complications too.

My brother and I were both adopted, and my wife and I are in the early stages of beginning to plan towards adoption, and yeah, it's a huge endeavor even in the best of circumstances. I was less than a month old when I was adopted so obviously I have no memory of live before my adoptive parents, but I still grappled with a lot of stuff around it as an adolescent, and I know my brother really really struggled with some of it as a young adult. It's something I'm profoundly grateful to my parents for doing and something I'm looking forward to hopefully doing myself but Mark Trail's assumption that children operate under "finders keepers" rules is really aggravating.

I'm probably paraphrasing the Something Positive comic wrong, but I remember the strips around PamJee amounting to "Hey, you've been looking for a kid for a while, we have a kid you guys can adopt but her health is pretty bad and things are going really rough for her and you'll only be provisionally granted custody so try not to gently caress up or we will take the baby from you."

I saw a couple I knew on TV documentary talking about their difficulties in adopting, they finally adopted a girl from the phillipines but it took them like 15 years from starting to consider it to it happening and it cost so much money and time. Time was literally running out for them. In their late 40s by the time they finally got the kid home. He said it was mental and emotional torture.
