I love how Far Side is so fundamentally Far Side that the strips hand selected for Memorial Day present the military as

- insufficiently competent to handle a slide projector while having authority over nuclear weapons
- the literal undead
- sticklers for absurd regulations
- and powerless in the face of a crisis

I thought Sulo beating a horse to death when he got drunk was just some weird one-off thing in his intro, so it's kind of surprising to have someone bring it up now. It gives weight to this woman's concern about Anni getting together with Sulo, though.

I'd like to point out that this Senator Bedfellow probably isn't just a generic 'corrupt politician' character, but was a response to the ABSCAM scandal.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abscam

Basically, the FBI used darker skinned agents to go undercover and pose as a bunch of Arab sheikh businessmen to offer bribes to Congressmen and local New Jersey politicians (and one Senator) in exchange for support for everything from getting casino gaming licenses and immigration visas to investing in a titanium mine. They nailed six Congressmen and one Senator, as well as the mayor of Camden, NJ, among others.

Bedfellow's cry of 'ENTRAPMENT' in the Sunday was also the defense used by everyone charged in the case. This wasn't just posturing either; at the time there had never been a 'sting' operation used for white collar crime like this before, and the difference between entrapment and a 'sting' operation wasn't settled case law yet. The juries didn't buy it and they all got convicted, but a few defendants got their convictions overturned by claiming that the FBI forced them to break the law by offering the bribes in the first place.

If you've ever seen American Hustle, that's the same case.

Oh, you're right. He was drunk, saw a man beating his horse, and then beat that man to death. Maybe it's hyperbole and Sulo knocked the guy out, but the gossip in their small town blew it out of proportion?

Yeah I think it is just an old-fashioned way of saying "do the right thing" that is unintentionally racist sounding. Not that casual racism is not found in Ella Cinders (I want to say we already had some but I don't remember what), just this is probably not an example of it.

Edit: You know, reading the wiki again maybe it is casual racism. I've seen the use before and I always thought it was referring to like how bad guys always wore black and good guys always wore white, but now I'm not so sure.

One thing that really strikes me about the classic Val is how swiftly the storylines move. Current Val has been on a guano-based side quest for the last four strips. Four strips ago in Vintage, Val hadn't even heard that Rome had fallen yet. The entire Cave Of Time thing only took about two and a half strips total.
