Thanatosian posted:Look, dude generally makes good videos; I'm definitely not endorsing everything he says (I don't buy a lot of what he has to say about holding and keeping power), but this video, his Brexit videos, and the several he did about electoral systems are all solid. He just kinda sorta regurgitated “the Logic of political survival”/“dictators handbook” which is an actual academic theory that came from using game theory to make predictions about politics. It’s called selectorate theory. Logic of Political survival is basically a giant math-y book that really lays it out while dictators handbook is a very easy to read summary of it but they cover the same concept and have the same authors. I think it’s actually extremely important to understand because it directly undermines every authoritarian ideology and fascism in particular and explains exactly why they’re so bad. It’s a purely structural approach to political theory, which explains exactly why that (usually right wing but not always) dangerous belief that “if we just took power our character and morals are just so much better we’d fix all the problems.” And basically, the logical conclusion of the theory is that if you want a prosperous and just society you need to decentralize and break up power and wealth whenever possible and ensure as many people as possible are as fully enfranchised as possible. It also explains why the US is rapidly moving in the direction of for the average citizen becoming the shittiest of nations that can be considered actual democracies because of wealth inequality, voter disenfranchisement and gerrymandering, and how disconnected voter preferences are from voter outcomes. It’s a lot more nuanced than previous theories that basically boiled down to democracy good dictatorship bad , because unlike previous binary ideas the logic applies equally, granularly and without having and arbitrary cutoff where the rules all change. It also explains why revolutionaries behavior prior to taking power often has little to do with how they behave once they’re there. Rutibex posted:so its Machiavellis The Prince, but with math? the idea is that in an organization where a lot of people have influence on who is in charge, the ruler has to uphold the common good to stay in power whereas if only a few people have that influence, the ruler has to spend his resources buying them off, which means making GBS threads on everyone else it's a more technical, developed theory though in that the character of a regime depends on the relative sizes of three groups: the people who can vote, the people who's vote actually matters, and the people who actually keep the regime in power

I'm guessing the cops singled out CNN because they see them as "that hippie left wing news outlet" and thought they were putting smug liberals in their place. They don't even realize they were loving with someone on their team.
