I can't share anything do to NDAs, but I just wanted to say that I just finished 2 animatics and submitted them to Comedy Central to pitch 2 show ideas.

If they say no I'll share them in 6 months! Yay NDAs! I just wanted to share with this dead thread what I was doing because I didn't know if I had time to finish by the deadline and I'm incredibly proud of one of them.

This is awesome. My girlfriend and I were discussing if you rotoscoped the opening turn from a video because it's so smooth.

In us news... I didn't do this loop because we wrote a spec script for American Dad. We are trying to get into Nickelodeon's writing program. Wish us luck.

I did it using displacement maps on different layers to make pseudo 3D. I plan on making a video on it... when I find the time. But for now I've done this other video on lip syncs:

My computer died, I have 3 things under NDA, and I am making 4-6 3min animated shorts this year for fun and to pitch to studios.

I won't be done until August. When my computer is resurrected next week I'll post some concept art. I am assuming Comedy Central will turn down 2 things in a couple of months and that will free them up to be posted to the tubes.

After doing the animatics for CC I finally feel competent with my timing starting to get where it needs to be.

We also did a spec script for American Dad and turned it into Viacom. That was to try and land a writing job with Nickelodeon. Basically I'm saying I'm still here but have nothing to show!

Hello again almost dead thread.

This is animation adjacent. This is the animatic that we turned in for Comedy Central's animation open submissions. I know what I would change for pitch 2 in terms of writing and design, but for now we can share it with the public since we are well done with the NDA period.

Hack and Fraud. Two zoo animals that escaped and are hiding in an office job. One messes everything up and the other one lies.

Failure #2

Here's another animatic that we submitted to Comedy Central that has passed the NDA date.

For Hack and Fraud we worked with two other writers. In between working with them my girlfriend and I thought we could make a 2nd pitch. It's a bit sloppy and suffers from pilotitis. If we were to pitch this a 2nd time I would jump right into a standard episode instead of setting up the world. The idea was to have a fish out water story where a huge fan of a sports entertainment show, Big Shots, gets his chance to join the cast. Think of American Gladiators meets The Larry Sanders show. I still like the concept, but the execution was lacking.

There's a lot going on in those shorts--it kinda feels like you're trying to tell an entire sitcom episode in just 3 minutes.

Since you're not writing 11 or 22-minute episodes here, you might be better served if rather than trying to show off an entire "episode" in that limited amount of bandwidth, if you just really narrow down on a specific scene. Keep the plot a small piece of a larger puzzle and just jump into it. What would be the funniest moment of an episode and just really stretch that moment out to fit your timeline. You don't need a full narrative arc with a resolution in something at this scale.

As it is the writing style leaves it all a bit slap-dash. It's not world-building as much as you think it is and the characters are running around so much you don't actually get a chance to get to know them. Sometimes less is more with the set pieces.

If feels that way because that's the goal! We are in no way trying to make a slice of life from an episode. We need a full narrative arc because that's the intent of a Go style pitch.

I do appreciate the feedback, but what your suggesting just is not our intent. For example when we (girlfriend and I) have pitched to Frederator (4 skype pitches with them), that's exactly what they've asked from us. They want a self contained full episode arc done in just 3-4mins. Think about the Adventure Time short treatment or better yet any current Mickey Mouse cartoon from Youtube (the Paul Rudish ones). That's the goal. The Mickey shorts aren't just a scene that is 4 minutes long. They are a full arc with resolution in a super short and fast paced piece.

The goal initially, was if Comedy Central didn't bite that we would turn around and pitch these directly to Frederator; so having it in their style for pitching was important to our structure because we are two people and not a studio. It cuts down our pitch turn around time to make a universal pitch that they all accept opposed to one stylized for each studio/network.

I do agree with pacing (especially on Big Shots). Comedy Central wanted it in 3 and we are bad self editors (it hurts to cut). Frederator will take up to 4 so that would give us time to retool it a bit if we ever wanted to give it time to breathe. Hack and Fraud is mostly just character work so I assume the world building comment is about Big Shots and I agree. Big Shots is just a mess all over. The pilotitis is so hard it hurts. It's just bad with a few wacky jokes.

Character study moment animations are great to do and amazing supplemental material if a studio allows it. Some have strict guidelines and others are like, "show me everything you have". Viacom made us write a spec script (we did an American Dad script and turned it in). At this point, we've moved on from both ideas (those were written last Nov/Dec) and we are currently in the middle of working out 3 new pitches for Frederator that are about to be thumbnail boarded in the next few months. If they say no we might retool Hack and Fraud or Big Shots and have 5 shorts to start shopping around. Thanks again for checking it out and taking the time to leave suggestions and feedback.

Yeah the BigShots one had so many set pieces and there wasn't really time to establish the different things and the transitions were very jarring. I also couldn't really tell if the pitch was supposed to be about the guy and his robot or just about the show "Big Shots" in general (and whether these guys were now going to be regulars in the cast). I kinda just wanted to see more stuff on smaller pieces of it, but I guess I'm not as familiar with the pitching process and the kind of condensed format they're looking for. Portions of it are funny and I can tell where you're going with it, it just felt a little bogged down by the format is all. :D

Pitching is something I've been thinking a lot about lately, though. I'm working on a web-series right now that I'm just kinda dumping on YouTube and it's doing reasonably well there, but I'd love to get around to actually showing it off to studio folks. That realm is really intimidating, though.

It only had 3 set pieces (home, backstage locker, and the arena). That's not too bad for a 3-4 min story, but I do feel like your 2nd point is the main issue we have with it. Above I had written that Big Shots suffers from "Pilotitis" badly. You couldn't tell whether the guy (Cameron) was the star or if it was an ensemble piece because we done hosed up. Hack and Fraud is our duel antagonist cartoon. When something happens in the story it should affect both characters (either both pos value changes, neg change or split change [one pos other neg and equal out by the end]). We think we did that fine. Big Shots, however, we butchered. It's like we wrote a treatment to get the world established for ourselves and then forgot to throw that away and begin the show...

For Big Shots the idea was to make an ensemble piece more like Community and Newsradio. Our arena would be the bottle (with changing games) and maybe we would go to their houses every so often (like when the Cheers gang went to Cliff's place), but instead we wrote a pilot and didn't show off group dynamics at all. That's why I consider that a major failure. If we had to do it over I would make a story where one of the Big Shots is having a personal issue that is being emotionally mirrored in the show somehow with Cameron helping to solve it as our anchor (think Dave in Newsradio or Sam Malone in Cheers).

Now on to you! Start looking around online for open submissions. And then start looking for people in studios that are responsible for deciding what shows are seen by their execs and start cold emailing them. They say they don't take unsolicited submissions, but when you show your work they conventiely have an NDA you can sign (unless they hate you then you get dumped into the BEGONE pile)! I've pitched now to Frederator, FX Network, NBC Universal, Nickelodeon, spec script to Viacom, and HBO. Our first one was a bit nerve wracking, but it helps that these are done over Skype usually. You don't have to fly anywhere and you can sit in the comfort of your own home/office. Just start doing it so you can start getting real feedback from them. Studio advice has changed how we work completely from when we first started pitching a few years ago. Once again, thanks for the opinions! It's always nice getting written feedback and criticisms that aren't "lol sucks" or "not my thing".

I did thing!

A super tiny production crew out of Chicago hired me to make a fake 90s kids' cartoon for their short film about an alien being captured and forced to do children's television.

They asked for rigged but with the looks of Magic School Bus characters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g28p4ACYbTI

Here's the short film it was a part of:
https://www.facebook.com/makeitupmedia/videos/2650964134997168/

(I did not write that)

Also, I got hired by a well known international brand (by sight if not by name) to write 10 episodes of a cartoon. It's going to be the backbone to launch their new toy line coming out in 2020. It should have about the same market penetration as those little Fingerlings monkeys.

So fun stuff this year! I'm more of a writer than an animator (clearly!); so it's nice to get a little recognition. I landed the job using my spec script for American Dad that I used to enter Viacom's Nickelodeon Writing Program.

Good stuff!

Congrats man! Writing for animation sounds really fun. Just make sure if you want visual gags that you write clearly what you want, since I’ve been on a few productions where the writers views were “the animators will make this funny” and... it wasn’t enough (and then Netflix didn’t pick up more seasons 😅 )

I’m transitioning from vfx back into the cartoon world in January and looking forward to being around directors who aren’t terrifying Hollywood royalty.

That has to be how it is done for this! They want little to no dialogue. Each episode is only 1m to 90s though. My writing partner and I are trying to hit a Paul Rudish (Mickey shorts on youtube) meets Mr Bean vibe for the gags. They are a massive company, but understandably they don't want to localize them for every country.

And thanks! We have been freelancing for two years now, and our goal is to write one more spec script and use this as a little clout to shop around for an agent this upcoming year.

What will you be doing in the cartoon world?

Animating on a fun little show at a nice mid-size studio in Montreal. They’ve benefited from being in close proximity to all the games studios so are doing some cool real time stuff. I probably shouldn’t reveal exactly which studio but they’re doing work and have a vision for their technological future roughly comparable to this Japanese studio Marza who I really respect:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pVyYCyYePGo

The main difference is that instead of Unity, the québécois studios are focusing on Unreal and get a ton of support from their close proximity to Epic Games.

Well that sounds interesting. I weirdly landed a job that combines video games and animation. A music agency hired me to make an animated music video done all in pixel art. It's going to be a Guardian Heros type thing but fighting to the music. Keep us posted on how your show turns out please.

The company that hired me to write saw my previous storyboards and have now have me storyboarding for them too. So that's fun. Our first episode has entered the animation phase and I have to start ep 2 writing on Monday.
