Also Souls: Good lord does the multiplayer hit detection suck. Since last time I complained I've also had about a third of invasions be cheaters of various degrees of obviousness, but even the non-cheated invasions are dogshit through lovely hit detection. loving Jedi Knight back on 56k was better than this, and it takes what would otherwise have been a fun distraction and completely ruins it.

Even better, it looks like the hit detection on effects is different than on damage. I can dodge through a spear strike just fine (now that I know I have to be twice the distance away than I should be), and I take no damage. That bleed and poison damage will still start stacking through, no problem there!
I've nothing against the theory of invasions, but connections are 100% guaranteed to be awful so I wish I could still opt out while being embered.

PvP and player invasions are pretty much the opposite of what I wanted out of Dark Souls. I hated every single one and by the third game I was just quitting to menu whenever they happened.

Not if you're trying to play multiplayer.

Interestingly I did this at the end of a session yesterday after my friend and I were invaded by a hacker. This dude's hack meant that he couldn't be hit, everything just went through him. That was until I pulled my ethernet cable after we hosed around just dodging him for a bit. Turn out, yanking my cable didn't disconnect him or my friend from my game, but it did make the invader vulnerable, and my friend killed him. I plugged in my cable and I was put into the same game to watch him die. I don't know man.

Nah, only the online specific stuff is removed if you play in offline mode. You don't miss out on any of the game's content, save for DS2 where there are several covenants whose donation items can only be obtained by playing MP. Generally covenant donation items are farmable somewhere, but not in DS2!

This is actually a feature that was only added in 3. In the first game most covenants were only doable through PVP or otherwise they accepted generic humanity turn-ins and didn't have a single unique PVE aspect to them, in 2 it's largely the same but there are both PVP covenents (two different varieties of blue and grey plus red, blue and red have arenas specifically for farming) but there are also some covenants like the covenant of champions that are specifically for PVE. Three is the only game where you can farm every covenant item from a PVE context, albeit at a really low drop rate.

I guess the Forest covenant in DS1 requires PVP wins to level up instead of donating items, but they specifically didn't give it any rewards you can't get elsewhere (you can do a crow trade for the Ring of Fog). You can get sunlight medals, eyes of death, dragon scales and souvenirs of reprisal from enemy drops. You also can still join the forest covenant and chat up Shiva of the East and stuff while you're offline.

poo poo that's right, the dragon covenent in the first game uses the dragon scale upgrade item as its turn-in :psyduck: I've forgotten way, way more about Dark Souls than I've realized. I must have always did the covenants the hard way this whole time and just assumed.

Arguably getting the dragon scales in PVE is the hard way because the drakes in the Valley of Drakes have a million health and only like a 2% chance to drop them :suicide:

There was so much weird stuff like this in Knight, I feel like the end product we got was a butchered attempt to make three games' worth of plot make sense as one story. So much stuff was rushed or didn't fit in or just kind of... Happened, to the point where even the Knight isn't really an important part of the plot at all and gets completely sidelined. Really wonder what went on in development.

Invasions are such a weird thing because generally you don’t interact with them unless you choose to, but there’s huge swaths of people who are so into it that they’re basically playing a totally different game.

I was extremely anti-invasion until something clicked for me, and now I specifically go and mess around in PvP to have some fun if I’m bored or struggling with a section. It helps a lot that the consumables you need are super plentiful in Bloodborne and DS3.

Far Cry Primal

I only played this because Horizon Zero Dawn is yet to come out on PC. This is basically 20 hours of grinding.

After committing genocide twice, hunting the four great beasts, and fulfilling every specialist quest the only thing left was to help "Urki", the resident comic-relief who appears in every far cry game. I immediately uninstalled. There doesn't appear to be a proper ending.

The skill-tree is the most boring thing ever. 80 useless abilities could have easily merged into 40 useful ones.

Stealth is all or nothing. No matter how I try every single encounter ends in chaotic bullshit. I never got to use the fancy take-down moves because some fucker always spots me, blows the horn, and a dozen more fuckers materialize out of nowhere.

The Batari fight is awful beyond words. You have to snipe this bitch with arrows, and with every quarter of health lost a poo poo-ton of minions are spawned. This woman has an absurd ton of health for someone who's only wearing body-paint. A first-person shooter grounded in relative realism should not have bullet-sponge enemies. A goddamn quick-time event would have been better.

You honestly could make an excellent Caveman RPG which would require a less-basic melee system, less casual murder, and quests with actual NPCs and not faceless civilians. The problem with every Ubisoft game is that the mechanics are sound but everything is arranged and structured in the most boring manner possible.

The user-interface leaves nothing to the imagination. They straight up tell you hours in advance that you'll recruit a specialist from each of the rival tribes. If Ubisoft made Final Fantasy VII they would tell you that Aerith doesn't stick around after the Temple level. Or in a Resident Evil game they 'd flash a big tutorial for how Mr X works before he even shows up.

I agree. The driving model was good but it's basically just for the challenges themselves. It's not integrated into the general gameplay, especially when you can get around the city with the gliding and grappling.

Props to them for making getting in and out of the Batmobile easy and seamless, though. Putting in mechanics where you can transition from high up between buildings to sitting in the driver's seat and vice versa is not just a fantastic Batman kind of thing to do but it works so well to use as the player. If only more games with vehicles and mounts had that slick as hell and useful transition. It's why the vehicles in Crackdown were so forgettable because the act of getting to and into your car was such an out-of-the-way chore.

Subnautica: The VR implementation, while kind of cool to use an cruise around in a world you've already built up, doesn't seem to actually function in terms of playing the game normally. No motion controller support so you either have to play with a controller or M+KB, but with M+KB there doesn't seem to be a way to interact with anything in your PDA so you can't really do much. Kind of seems like it was added in as an afterthought but with a few simple tweaks to how it controls and how the menus interact it could have been really good. Shame they seem to have completely moved on to the next game at this point.

Yeah this is pretty much where I fall on it as well. On its own it can be great, and would make for a great game, but it just wasn't fit well into the game. Way too many times where I got frustrated because it was required for something that I didn't feel like doing at the time.

Yeah I didn't end up minding the races too much as their own thing.

The tank battles were what really annoyed me because a huge part of what makes the game fun is the fluidity and dynamism of Batman moving around the environment, while the vehicle fights felt like you just dodged side to side.

The Batmobile got its own skill-tree which uses points from the same, painfully-limited pool as your other skills. It actively made the game worse by forcing you to invest in it over your other, more fun abilities to survive the Batmobile sections.

Little thing dragging down Hack GU Last Recode - the VA for the arena announcer changes right after the main story in volume 2, and the new one just isn't as good IMO.

(btw, while looking things up to be sure the VA did change and I didn't imagine it, I found there's an optional scene in vol 3 that I would have just missed out on if I didn't make a secondary save like 20 minutes before where I left off to test something out, and I really wish the original VA was around for it)

Bigger things bringing the game down though are story things, some of which are probably a result of the games originally being released around 06-07, like in vol 2 there's a recurring "joke" where one female antagonist gets misgendered practically every time she shows up and she gets angry about it. That's the joke.

And now in vol 3 I just got to a part where I might need to help someone suffering from DID... to save the 2nd, fake personality from going away?

What might have made it more fun was introducing as another option to overcoming obstacles instead of all the endless tank fights. I love all the Arkham games to varying degrees but locking skills needed to beat the game in Knight behind like 50 Batmobile fights was a drag.

What are games where an important character model is incredibly ugly, and not by design? Where there's a disparity between characters that share the same space?

Desmond in AC3 looks like a bender with a glandular problem. He's incredibly ugly whereas in the previous game he looked normal except for the fact his ethnicity changed to middle-eastern.

There was a terrible Sherlock Holmes game where a new PS4 Holmes meets with a recycled PS3 Lestrade.

I had a very poor impression with Psychonauts because a lot of the characters you meet look like rear end next to Raz. Come to think of it everything about that game was busted to some degree right up to the last level which most people never beat, myself included.

Really enjoying replaying Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, it's mostly really well thought out exploration & platforming, but with occasional weirdly clunky moments. Like who the hell picks up this type of game and wants an extended insta-fail stealth section? And beyond that, getting caught sends you all the way back to the start, rather than the current screen, unlike every other challenge section in the game :psyduck:
