Not knowing Rock at all I can't guess at his motivations but I'd guess him being a former wrestler and pro football guy who obviously still has a vested interest in the game he either has some kind of media idea for the intellectual property or just couldn't pass up the chance to buy it on the cheap. Rich guys don't look for a return on investment when they buy a super expensive car or boat. It could just be a toy for Rock to play with.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if the Rock can successfully retool the XFL for a streaming service. He has some show on Netflix over here that's a bit like gladiators I think? But like that guy is so charming, he could sell honey to a bee.

A guy at work had a baby this year and we jokingly bought him an xfl onesie. I just remembered the baby was born after the xfl season ended and by that point was wearing a vintage defunct collectors item no one would ever want.

the purchase makes no sense to me, the only thing I can think of is if they use the IP for one of their TV shows or a future one but even then, surely Dwayne and his business partners have some sort of outside contracted business analyst who can tell them there's lawsuits and really no potential for the league.

The problem with having all the eggs in the TV basket is that they can't accept the TV ratings being down and slowly rebuild, it has to be fixed NOW, so they go back to popping ratings with nostalgia, all the while doing nothing to replace those nostalgia acts and being confused as audiences dwindle...
