You literally posted the number one deck in the Wild Format. Not saying it isn't fun (I have never played it).

Hosted a local Fireside gathering to open my packs, was easier than I thought it'd be. Got Golden Professor Slate(from my golden packs), Golden Jandice Barov(from regular packs), Star Student Selina, Speaker Gidra, Turalyon, Willow, Sphere of Sapiance, and Kel'thuzad. 8 legendaries in 90 packs is pretty good. I'll at least try out Jandice since I got her as golden. By the way I didn't realize until now that you can open your packs with just spacebar. I knew you could actually open the packs with it but I thought you still needed the mouse to flip the cards.

I got 4 legendaries in 86 packs, Soulcioligist Malicia, Ace Hunter Kreen, Forest Warden Omu and Vectus. Definitely not the most I've gotten which was 6 or 7 I think and pretty sure with previous bundles I've gotten less legendaries overall but they were all ones I wanted whereas none of these were on the list. Ah well, you win some, you lose some. Still got the golden legendary when the set actually comes out, enough gold for 20 more packs and probably 20k dust when I dust the extras from Scholomance so should be able to make something fun.

It is moderately annoying that Transfer Student will give you a 'dual class' card on the new board but the dual class cards aren't activated until Wednesday so you get... things. Reno the Relicologist and Twin Slice, for example.

But I also (obviously) play way too much Hearthstone. I also don't really buy other games until they're several years old and on sale so spending $80 every four months doesn't usually make me feel ripped off -- unless it's Boomsday. This is pretty much my viewpoint too although I missed Boomsday so I guess I lucked out? A lot of the new cards look really fun to play with. I am saving all my DH extras in case they turn out to be OP.

It may not be for you, but I expect to get way more per hour in play for the $50 invested and that's my value on money I spend on games.

As I said, I've spent money on the game exactly twice: once for the starter bundle, and once for this one. Seeing as I probably average 15-30 minutes a day on this game, for a period of ~2 years, I'm still pretty far ahead on my investment. I just happened to like what this set had, plus I figured it was about time to give a little bit back for my entertainment.

PneumonicBook posted:I'm used to physical magic the gathering so...its mostly comparable. Compared to Magic, Hearthstone is downright cheap. Between spending the dollar equivalent of roughly one and a half booster boxes, the saved gold from the past 3-4 months, and the dust from a mass disenchant, I can get a complete playset of each expansion.

Also, pretty sure people who play physical-card MTG would LOVE a system where packs were guaranteed to not give them duplicate legendaries if they were collecting to play and not to immediately flip 'jackpot' mythics. I never even played WoW, but Hearthstone's a game I can load up on my phone on my lunch break (after checking out said phone) and curse sotto voce at people when they pull off a bullshit win out of nowhere.

I've probably spent over £100 total on HS since Beta, but less than £20 in the last 2 years and I will never buy the expansion pre-orders unless they drastically change in value - to me, as someone who has spent quite a bit, the pre-orders are still a rip-off. I have no interest in BGs or skins for heroes either. Once you get a complete Classic collection it helps - you end up gaining more dust. Also the new dupe protection rules help with collecting too.
|
# ? Aug 3, 2020 08:26 |

I've started buying the mid-tier pre-orders now that dupe protection is in place, because it pretty much just guarantees the core set and a lot of dust to get your preferred epics and legendaries. It always felt REALLY bad opening a triple of an epic.
|
# ? Aug 3, 2020 08:29 |
|
My biggest problems were Epics, and specifically worrying about crafting a second one just to then open a dupe later. I often played decks with 1x specific Epics for that reason.

You could get by with just the 70-75 packs you would get from the gold doing if you do all of your dailies as long as you dust gold cards and stuff that rotate out. Legendaries for the most part haven't been that important. Galakrond/Kronx were given to everyone for free, and then DQA and Zeph were the main other core legendaries you needed for the last while. This set is the first one in a while where you are going to want to get most of the legendaries.

If you're a stone cold competitor you prob don't need to spend all that much. Take a teir 1 deck and play the crap out of it. When expansion hits, abuse suboptimal experiments as the meta settles. When meta settles, craft just enough cards to continue or pivot to new best deck. Maybe you can't be F2P and prob smart to avoid Highlander decks but there's almost always a cheap powerful option. I didn't used to spend much on HS because I would play zoo or face aggro relentlessly. But now I like to dick around more and boy they make you pay for the privilege.

Xguard86 posted:If you're a stone cold competitor you prob don't need to spend all that much. That's EXACTLY it. You actually don't need all those cards if you get a premium HSreplay account, use it, and read Viscous Syndicate for what's actually happening in the game. Get that deck, play it to death and there you are. I remember (again MtG) reading about some pros and they were saying they do not have any affinity to any color or card or card type. It's all numbers for them. Most of us are playing to also be entertained so it's hard to break down card games to that level.

I found that if you limit yourself to 3 classes (and dust everything rare or better for everyone else) and do every daily quest, after a year or so you'll have enough to play just about whatever deck you want in one of those classes with a few epics missing in the other two. You'll also not have the "bad" legendaries. By the second year, when you have some wild stuff to dust, you'll have nearly everything for those three classes - but your neutral set will still be missing some stuff. Maybe now in year three, with even more to dust and the new advantages of duplicate protection, better monthly season rewards, and an entire "free" class in Demon Hunter I'll be able to expand to four or five. In short: yes, if your goal is simply to be competitive then it's very easy not to spend a dime. If your goal is to screw around with neat toys, it's still possible but you need to be very limited in the classes you play.

Between expansions I usually do not buy anything with gold, the only exception this time was the 500g card back available, and I'm looking at around 8000 gold just from regularly playing as usual. 80 packs plus the regular free packs you get from brawls, occasional quests and the free packs you always get from other stuff once a new expansion launches should be enough to get you started on a new set of cards, too. That's even without touching any dust or limiting yourself to certain classes.
|
# ? Aug 3, 2020 17:26 |

I usually save up 4-5000 gold, then just run Arenas for the first month or so of an expansion or until I run out of gold. By then I have enough cards/dust for a few meta decks to play on ladder while I save up for the next expansion. Honestly though I mostly just gently caress around in Wild with gimmick decks these days. Blizzard's been scummy enough lately I don't really want to give them money.

Isn't it more cost effective to buy from one set that you have the most cards of, then get a bunch of dust so you can craft whatever you want
