I AM NOT BEING PAID TO CORRECT OTHER PEOPLE'S POSTS! DONKEY!!

In this The Timid Soul, more attention to detail in terms of the reflections on the polished floor. This is the first I've ever seen the term "speculator" in a context where it would mean what we today describe as "ticket scalper".

I'll admit I don't 100% get the joke here - is it "anyone who wasn't such a laughable coward would try to bullshit their way into the performance anyway" ?

I think the joke is that Caspar bought his ticket from a scalper, but the sign scares him out of even trying to use it -- he just tears it up and throws it away, rather than risk having to present it to the ticket taker and maybe get caught.

Dykes to Watch Out For #93 (1990)
-Alison Bechdel

This one feels really evergreen to me, not only because Mo flipping her poo poo over being called a liberal feels very timeless but because I think there's something almost universally legible to this sense of two people who should really have split up already just not willing to get to that point with themselves or each other. This feels like the build-up to a very final breakdown but believe it or not Mo and Harriet stay together for a good chunk of the comic after this-- but the sense we've already seen of their friends feeling shaky with the longevity of the relationship continues to build from here on out.

Edit: Full disclosure this one also always stings to me because I spent much of my young adult relationships and friendships being the Mo in this scenario and in hindsight I was abominable. I thought that being sure I was ideologically correct meant I could segue the urgency I felt about woeful current events into rudeness to people who didn't agree with me. Now I find it pretty easy to see Harriet's side of things-- she loves her girlfriend and you know, definitely does care about environmental and social justice, but she's being made out as the bad guy here for having less ethical rigor than Mo. It's a tense strip because honestly Bechdel has done such a good job of making both characters lovable and getting us as readers invested in their happiness. Seeing both of their personalities contribute to the fraying of that happiness is painful to see, which I think is the intent, mitigated a little by the vaudeville-esque narration. Bechdel is the best.
The fact that this feels like a final breakup but isn't is one of the reasons I suspect autobiographical leakage from Bechdel's multiple real relationships over the period.

There's a history point here. This comic came out near the nadir of liberal self-identification in the US. Self-identified liberals had outnumbered conservatives in the 60's but by 1992 conservatives outnumbered liberals by nearly 2 to 1. This was partly due to shifts in opinion when economic problems of the 70's were blamed on liberal policies, but also partly by a long-running and thorough opinion-shaping campaign by the Republicans and conservatives to demonize the term "liberal". The campaign really "took" after Dukakis' loss and by the time of the strip "liberal" was a dirty word and even liberals were looking for euphemistic ways to describe themselves. I find it amazing the opinion campaign worked so well because only 20 years before "liberal" had been a badge of honor, and it has retained its positive meaning when referring to those challenging authoritarian regimes.

That opinion campaign was so successful that in 2018 Gallup found "conservatives" outnumbered "liberals" by 35% to 26% - even though the median public opinion on specific economic issues is roughly in line with the left wing of the Democratic party, which is generally considered left of "liberal" in current political-speak. There's been a big shift in the past 2 years, though, and now "conservatives" barely outnumber "liberals", 36% to 34%. OTOH I suspect actual policy preferences have shifted left too with the coronavirus and so opinion may still be very different from self-identification.

I suspect Bechdel was aware of how "liberal" had been demonized and was doing her bit to mock the process, but I'm not sure.

Schwarzwald posted:

With all the grief Pearls Before Swine has gotten for mildly risque jokes over the years, if 9CL doesn't get mass cancellations after Thorax removed a woman's panties (telepathically? prehensile genitalia?) on-panel, there is no justice in the world.

The LA Times puts up a PDF here. But after a certain number of page views they ask you to login with a subscription. Many papers have this option, so if anyone has a subscription to one it'd be relatively easy to pull the comics.
