Denis don't miss baby. I'm one of those weirdos that has loved the past 10 years of movie trailers having spooky/moody covers of classic songs. They've all been bangers. Even Dark Souls III got in on the action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZvKFWT3XLo

I liked the shields. Couldn't help but notice that Momoa has a beard at one point, and then not. Maybe he shaves it off after the duke comes to Dune but maybe they expanded his role? edit: I'm holding out hope the movie receives more vibrant color grading between now and release.

I think I need more time with this trailer. I don't want to admit to being underwhelmed? Really did not like the song choice for this (Pink Floyd is overrated to be honest), or the pacing of the trailer. Also, I noticed that December 18th is no longer mentioned as the release date. Denis Villeneuve like a month ago said that post-production editing and reshoots are far from complete and expressed serious doubt about finishing the film on time. Between that, and Warner Brothers seeing that Tenet flopped in theaters, I think this movie is being pushed back in 2021.

Arrakis should definitely be fiery loving red not gloomy and grey. Also I hate that they spoiled the worms. Otherwise I am so here for this.

Yeah, the movie is the first half. The trailer straight up tells you Arrakis is a trap and that Leto is going to lose it. Weird choice!

My understanding of how the books explain Arrakis, is that it would actually not look like that, because it's an entire desert planet, how it looks in the film is pretty accurate. Does it make for a good cinematic look? Nope, but at least its realistic I suppose!

It doesn't actually tell you much about the plot or even who the majority of the characters are.

It does look kinda grey and washed out a lot, yeah. But: I like the carving and the callback to the Atreides ancestors, which suggests they're leaning into all the noble houses trying to claim lineage back to Agememnon and co. Paul's opening dialogue and his demeanour throughout half the trailer feel very horror movie, so hopefully they're gonna do a lot with his slowly dawning horror as he becomes the KH - his panic-attack in the sand-tent is one of my favourite scenes of the novel. These are two big Dune-y things that the other adaptations really missed, so to see em front and centre in the trailer like this...I'm pumped.

Yeah that's dumb but I wonder how liberally they're using first half. There's not really a climax in there so I imagine they're going to rearrange some things. IIRC Dune does have small polar ice caps in the first book some folks will hack at to transport water from but I don't think this is mentioned again. I don't know, you can do a LOT with colorful natural rock formations and stuff like that if you wanted something more colorful or if you pick some choice spots to film different scenes at. Conan the Barbarian was really good with that, outside of the opening almost every location is "rocky wasteland with some homes or stone buildings" but they do a good job making each area have a different feel and tone based on what what terrain they chose to shoot on for each. You can feel the difference in all the barbarian ripoff movies that followed where it's clear they all filmed in once place and don't convey just through the visuals that someone's traveled really far. Pretty stupid - it's just a trailer and it's not like the music will be used to score the entire movie. Pink Floyd is omega-popular for a very good reason - they were masters at making music. It started off as pop but quickly evolved into crazy soundscapes that you truly could get lost in. Vintersorg fucked around with this message at 18:53 on Sep 9, 2020 |

Maybe Villeneuve is taking a "the actors' faces are the most important thing in a shot and nothing should distract from them" approach, but that felt... sterile. All these huge, expansive spaces with not a lot going on in them, as if background detail had been deliberately toned down. Still, maybe that's because I was viewing it on a phone and it'll look far more impressive on a giant screen... ah.
