today the sky was grey, which was actually worse on the ground. orange meant the smoke was so high up it was scattering the light. grey means it’s down here getting in lungs and raining ash

I don't understand it from the standpoint of lighting This is just my partial knowledge as lens nerd about light and optics, so duckduckgo it if you wanna be 100%. Anyway... The ash (or pollution) suspended in the sky creates a sort of subsurface scattering (where the surface would be the entirety of the air that has suspended ash in it) meaning the light bouncing off the tiny particles suspended in the air - and it affects the shorter wavelengths (aka colder light) more, leaving the longer wavelengths which are largely reddish brownish hues. And the scattering within the surface makes the light seem so eerily uniform and directionless, something you can also observe on very cloudy days.
