Gamecube was the original developed version. Xbox was a decent port, PC was a mess, and Playstation 2 was a disaster.

If you want the worst possible experience, get the Playstation 3 one - it's the Playstation 2 version played on a lovely emulator. It's got all the PS2 bugs and missing features with extra bonus bugs on top.

I didn't play SA1 or 2 as a kid (didn't have a dc or gc, I convinced my saint mother to get a Saturn LOL) so playing heroes in middle school as baby's first 3d sonic has always been my 100% blind-spot nostalgia title that I can't ever physically bring myself to hate :unsmith:

I'll the the advice and see will see if it survives the test of time emulated on dolphin. The pc mod had a hack that extends draw distance so I hope dolphin has something like that too...

My first sonic game was the OG and sonic heroes was my favorite 3d entry for a long while. I know that's an unpopular opinion but the bad controls never took away from the awesome aesthetic choices they made for the game. I always thought the 3d games had terrible control so whats one a little jankier with art and music i find a lot more appealing?

They really should just re-release Colors as Colors DX for modern consoles and PC. It holds up well enough at 1080p as is, judging by Dolphin. Improve the texture resolution and push it out for low price, I reckon it'd sell well enough.

Hell, look at how it looks with a fan just dumping all the textures into Gigapixel Upscaler and autoupping them all.

How's the PC version a mess? From my experience the problems are extremely minimal like almost unnoticeable missing effects. Better than running it on Dolphin for sure.

I literally couldn't get Heroes running on my current machine at all. PC gaming is a total shitshow for anything designed for XP or older.

Plus Dolphin runs like a dream, doesn't require game installs and has a bunch of options for uprezzing. It's an absolutely solid choice, especially when the PC version doesn't add anything to the experience.

Did you check the PCGW article? Usually it has working patches and whatnot.

As for Dolphin... emulation always adds glitches. Although it's hard to know with Heroes, given that it is what it is.

Nah, people say that constantly, but any major console up to and including PS2 and GameCube emulate without issue, and even PS3 has an increasingly decent working emulator now. I played Heroes on Dolphin and it runs exactly the same as it always did.

First time I played Heores was one summer when I was at a summer house and when it got too hot to play outside I'd go inside and play. So over the course of two weeks I've back to back 100% Sonic Heroes, Shadow and Sonic Riders for the PS2.
Still fond memories of all these games.

Ehhhh, I know the game is fully playable (it is, I 100%ed it on Dolphin) but I don't trust it to be Perfect. BSNES it ain't.
PS2 emulation also has a long way to go, you still have to switch between hardware and software if you want the sky rendered correctly in Burnout 3.

Disc emulation will always be fucky due to the fact that you cannot really emulate a spinning physical drive. That's why you can have working NES and SNES emulators, but PS2 and GCN are a bit trickier.

I watched through a friend of mine go through Heroes on dolphin and it seemed ok. Only bit that seemed weirder than normal was the special stages, but those were already jank and I couldn't tell if it was jankier or if maybe my friend was just that bad at them (it was his first time through heroes and I never had much issue on GC).

star light
mystic cave
lava reef, hydrocity if i can cheat and get both an s3 and s&k stage
lost world
crazy gadget
hang castle/mystic mansion with a bigger focus on the mystic mansion part
kingdom valley
jungle joyride
asteroid coaster or terminal velocity if reimagined like sky sanctuary was

theres not really a good sense of progression here even if they were to be rearranged but idc, these are my favorite stages that werent already done in generations

what

sega cd emulation is easy, clean, and accurate, and has been for over a decade. gcn emulation is smooth as butter, and wii emulation is just as good. ps3 emulation is also good, as long as you have reasonably powerful hardware. ps2 emulation is the unwanted stepchild that would run like poo poo on a supercomputer with a dozen gpus

No current opinions on the stage selection but I was really hoping for some kind of dlc to add more endgame type stages to the game since it's pretty easy in its own. My ideal setup would be Death Egg, Crazy Gadget, and Eggmanland so you get something from each era with maybe a bonus boss if you own all three

Reading about older Sega franchises recently and they've been weird seemingly a long time. Like apparently PS3 is what it is because they cut the entire team while promoting this super revolutionary game. So apparently Phantasy Star 3 sucked so Sonic may live. (Well, sucked might be too strong a term, it's kind of my favorite of the three genesis titles, but people hate it)

And Golden Axe they had an arcade hit they instead didn't port and then made a Japan exclusive Golden Axe 3 which was apparently so bad critics applauded them not releasing it elsewhere. There's probably more but off the top of my head that sounds like modern Sega while happening thirty years ago. Sega has been weird for most of our lives!

I feel like the big theme with Sega is that the 3 branches of Sega: America, Japan, & Europe were all so disparate and off on their own tangent that it resulted in a lot of inconsistencies. Just looking at how every Sega system was most popular in a different territory shows how all over the place they were. And the whole Sega CD/32X/Saturn fiasco just further cemented those problems. Nintendo of Japan gets a lot of crap for keeping NoA on such a tight leash, but I have to imagine watching Sega shoot themselves in the foot time and again throughout the late 90s/early 2000s is a big part of why they never gave their international branches more free reign outside of marketing.
