I think the inner conflict can make for compelling characters and situations, though it’s all in the execution. There’s a film called The Eternal Zero that kinda plays with elements of that, a Japanese fighter pilot who’s not a huge fan of the war becoming a kamikaze pilot, and their grandchildren trying to understand his motivations by interviewing people who knew him. yeah, after re-reading some posts I realized that a huge part of the devolving argument was trust in EA's ability to actually pull anything off with it and a circular argument about whether or not humanizing fascists inherently humanizes fascism. I have 0 trust in EA to make anything worthwhile out of Grey as a character or as an example.

I went looking to see if this would be smart delivery, and EA's official answer is: "We currently have no plans to share around Squadrons coming to the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5. --Tom" via their answered questions forums. So looks like there are no plans for any kind of next gen updates for the game, if anyone else was curious. Also, they recently confirmed HOTAS support at launch for both consoles as well as PC (apparently for a while the official answer was "we are working on it but don't count on it at launch"). EA/Motiv have not responded to questions about crossplay and whether or not it is optional, but they have confirmed to media outlets that crossplay is go for all consoles and VR. If you are worried about crossplay, it will probably not be optional as this genre has not done particularly well in the past 20 years and is only recently starting to make a comeback (I have heard offhand from some friends who work in the media side of the industry that the popularity of Battlefront 2's flight modes was part of how this got greenlit) which might also explain the price. If it was optional I'd imagine EA would confirm that, as opposed to staying silent about it. EDIT: I also could not find anything about whether or not you could squad up through crossplay and play with your friends on different platforms, and while my general experience with crossplay is that you can not, Origins and EA access means it might be possible with Squadrons. If anything low-end joystick users are gonna be at a disadvantage when they snap the z-axis off of their thrustmasters.

War Thunder has crossplay between PC and PS4 and the skill gap isn't as wide as you might think for the dogfighting game modes.

Way back in the day, the Freespace 2 community ran into mouse and keyboard vs keyboard only vs joysticks, and they found that each had their own unique advantages. Don't know if anybody nowadays will play keyboard only/if that will be supported, but it's the same with controllers. Crossplay only really matters in terms of balance in the context of shooters or RTS, areas where the mouse excels. It's good news that we have it for player count though! Arcsquad12 posted:War Thunder has crossplay between PC and PS4 and the skill gap isn't as wide as you might think for the dogfighting game modes. It's very much in favour of the PC player at higher skill levels and in sim battles. A guy in VR with a HOTAS of equal skill in the same plane will beat a guy on a PS4 every time. For the Arcade Battles, the PS4 asterisk tends to mark you out as an easy kill compared to others, so you tend to spawn furballs around yourself. RFC2324 posted:Kb+m will always have an advantage, unless the code actively hurts them. Its just the most precise input method available. iirc m+kb in Squadrons will be virtual joystick so you'll probably be at a big disadvantage for maneuvers

Fps is why its ingrained in me, but kb+m is more precise(gunnery) which is an advantage. That said, if the controls are good enough I can slam the throttle to 0 and spin(or other maneuvers that need hotas control) I will jizz myself as I fail to do it

Gunnery isnt quite as important since there is bullet magnetism in this. Having the accuracy of a mouse will help, but it's not a huge advantage like a normal shooter. If this was like warthunder's Arcade/RB controls then yeah, it would have a massive advantage but this isnt the case. If anything a controller or joystick will feel more intuitive than a mouse. Mkb was fine, but could feel a bit disorienting at times. Symetrique fucked around with this message at 01:46 on Sep 16, 2020 |

RFC2324 posted:Fps is why its ingrained in me, but kb+m is more precise(gunnery) which is an advantage. Again, very much depends on the style of implementation. Freespace 2 handled like a 6DOF shooter, Freelancer did semi-uncoupled aiming linked to a virtual joystick dragging the ship toward the pointer, War Thunder figures out somehow a path from where your nose is pointing to wherever you want the plane to go while keeping guns at your nose, etc. The Squadrons approach looks like a virtual joystick with coupled aiming and a hefty deadzone, which I think will put them at a disadvantage compared to joystick, though it'll take actually playing it to judge.

RFC2324 posted:Thats exactly what I meant when I said actively fixing it. I mean they're still limited by the turn/roll/yaw speed of the vehicle. The main concern with mouse movement would be the accuracy that comes with fine input control, but again, when everyone has some degree of bullet magnetism this matters less. I understand why this would be a huge concern as an fps player. I mean even in Battlefield a player with mkb had an edge in aircraft accuracy, but I really don't think that it's gonna be the case for Squadrons. I spent most of my time using a joystick, but I also tried with an Xbox controller and mkb. Really didn't feel like I was gaining an advantage with a mouse.

X is in charge of not only pushing around shield priority, but engine/laser power? I wonder how that works? Shielded craft won't be able to shunt power to the laser bank?

RangerKarl posted:X is in charge of not only pushing around shield priority, but engine/laser power? I wonder how that works? Shielded craft won't be able to shunt power to the laser bank? That’s different from the power management on the d-pad. Unshielded craft (i.e. TIE fighter/interceptor/bomber) instead have a special power relay that lets them instantly shunt all reserved energy into one system or the other. Other ships have to let their systems charge.

Yeah, so I guess we won't be able to boost shields from lasers like in the old games, seems fair.

Shunting power around was such a good gimmick tho. I can understand how they're balancing it but it'll still be missed.
