Here's a bigger version of the original first picture:

First off, it looks like somebody's just added dots where the caves are to the version in the tweet - in fact after looking further, that's exactly what's happened, thanks to this four-year-old reddit comment; the resulting image (which is now in the tweet) is this one. Second, it's not a map of all mysterious disappearances, it's a map of some people who disappeared, mostly those in national parks. Finally, the research has been undertaken by David Paulides, who previously spent years trying to prove Bigfoot is real and may be somewhat biased.

Wikipedia posted:

...his work on this subject began when he was doing research in a national park and an off-duty park ranger found him and expressed concern about the questionable nature of some of the missing person cases which occurred in the parks. The ranger knew Paulides' background and asked him to research the issue. Paulides obliged, and asserts that he uncovered multiple lines of evidence suggesting negligence on the part of the park service in failing to locate the missing people. He broadened his investigation to include missing people from across the world, and this led to his belief that he has uncovered a mysterious series of worldwide disappearances, which defied logical and conventional explanations.

As of 2019, Paulides has written nine books on this topic. According to A Sobering Coincidence, he does not yet have a theory on what is causing the disappearances, although he indicates that the "field of suspects is narrowing." Paulides advised his readers to go outside of their normal comfort zone to determine who (or what) is the culprit.

Could there be simpler explanations for why people occasionally die or disappear when they journey into the wilderness? Of course not.

Edit: Wait, does he think Bigfoots are killing them???

Is that what that tweet was supposed to imply? I thought the obvious conclusion was that a lot of people just fall in holes and are never found. This person mysteriously disappeared, there is also a cave system nearby, maybe they got lost or fell down an unknown entrance and died.

It's mostly that the tweet is comparing a map of cave systems to a map of cave systems, so it's not surprising they look similar. One of the cave system maps also has some labels that were selected by a conspiracy theorist. Mostly the old-fashioned kind of crazy, more UFOs and Bigfoots and less Qanon (though he has tweeted some dumbass poo poo about COVID-19). Getting more attention on missing persons is fine too, and the risks of hiking/camping alone or unprepared; he just gets a little carried away.

https://twitter.com/canammissing/status/1292458254170124288

Note: the person in that tweet is still missing, but more recent articles mention the camp was a week-long birthday party/rave, and according to his parents he was "getting his life back together after hitting a rough spot with drugs".

Paulides missing 411 series is interesting- and there are some creepy cases. But A) it’s real easy to get lost in the wilderness and B)also the other cases probably involve people getting murdered or kidnapped by people (or bears) who easily escape into the woods.

So it’s (probably) not Bigfoot or UFOs or cave goblins.

When I would go hiking my aunt would freak out and tell me to bring a GPS and sat phone because if I got in trouble the Parks would intentionally ignore me and cover up my disappearance. We're both Canadian where this conspiracy holds no water.

She's also a lead-brained anti-mask TERF.

I am estranged now, no worries there.
