I have a vague memory of her being accused of scamming people or trying to "fund-raise" for things with dubious accounting, and then was exposed for having a sock puppet following her around all the time?

It's noticeable to me and others that over the more than 75 years following World War II and about 2.5 generations, the only stereotypes of Germans in the more popular British press, movies and so on tend to be Nazi, crazed scientist, Kraftwerk-type musician, Bavarian idiot in lederhosen and a few others.Even these forums are full of brilliant and original hints to those effects by British posters. I'm sure there are exceptions, but the seething hatred at the base of this is pretty obvious. Kinda like how the Chinese seem to feel about the British about the oh so recent Opium Wars. It wouldn't diminish anyone as a person to give current, living people the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. And this is specifically British. Other countries don't do this to such an extent.

There is no seething hatred of Germans in the popular British consciousness. I have literally never seen this. The closest I can think of is Brexit rabble rousing against Europe in general, but even this I have never seen as hatred of individual countries. It normally crops up as resentment of the EU as an institution, referred to as "Brussels" not "Berlin". My stereotype of a German, which I thought was pretty widespread, is a very organised blonde man (optional moustache) who likes beer and drives a forklift.
