Poor Miserable Gurgi posted:This is real loving depressing. Every time I go on facebook the past few months, I see everyone I know in theatre trying desperately to keep their poo poo together as they all find day jobs. Performance arts may take another year to come back, and a lot of small theatres will never be back. It's so depressing, and hearing "learn to code!" from people recently is just a nice loving cherry on top of that pile of poo poo. i don't know why, maybe because i work in arts/media and know a good deal of actors, but more than anything else, this being actual government policy stated by some guy who'll probably be prime minister when boris' aorta fails has made me feel like i need to just give up on life here and move on. i hate thinking that way because of all the people i know here who aren't able to do the same but the idea that a country can exist without its own arts culture because government is willing to let it die in these circumstances is too much. somehow killed hope beyond the corbyn ratfuck i didn't know i still had

Being fair, apparently that ad was from last year, so it's actually a general hatred of the arts rather than a specific response to covid

"Get a job in cyber", they said. And then you end up with being asked for five year's experience in a language that was first released two years ago.

TinTower posted:"Get a job in cyber", they said. I think a huge part of the push for every human to learn to code is by the owners of tech companies hoping to flood the labor market so they can start paying the people who write programs for iPhones the same as the people who sell iPhones.

It's also useful in maintaining the fiction that a "skills gap" is what keeps unemployment high, versus structural factors the money masters have no interest in changing.

One of the worst things done after WWII (and later the end of the Cold War) was rebrand loving everything possible to make it seem like various factions had just up and disappeared.

This is pretty much a constant thing, see the post-Reconstruction South and the half-rear end job we did of de-Nazification in West Germany.

Knowing how weirdly connected American theatre is, and how working on a random show in New York lead to discovering a lot of mutual West Coast friends, I imagine every UK theatre person is like one step away from all the others. EDIT: it's weird we don't have a theatre professionals thread in Creative Convention or some place on the forums. I've seen quite a few people in random threads over the years. I know that's a weird way of putting it, but most goons I've seen have a sort of old-school approach to the internet in that you put as little personal info up in public as possible. If the theater community is that small, having a dedicated thread for it seems like a decently good way of unintentionally doxxing yourself.

"Cyber" is my favorite anti-shibboleth: when someone uses that term, chances are very good they have no loving idea what they're talking about when it comes to any computer-related topic.
