Just listened to the except, Jonathon Carley does a pretty good Younger John Hurt. The sets are starting literally right after Night, the expert has Ohilia mentioning that they're about to bury Kass. I'm cautiously optimistic

It's been that way for years, with no less than THREE First Doctors (David Bradley, William Russell, and Peter Purves), Frazier Hines as the Second, and Tim Treloar as the Third.

Then of course, you had Bradley and Richard Hurndell as the First on TV.

It'll be interesting if BF can/will license photos of a young John Hurt for the covers.

tbh I think I'd care more if there was any sense of who the writers were and what the plots are.

Reminds me of David Bradley, in that it's close enough to get the job done, but it lacks the spark the original actor brought to the role

I think I like this approach, since it's a newly regenerated version of War, the fact his voice sounds a little younger/off is sensible. Thankfully we at least got the one box set with Hurt and the 50th to cap off his eventual run.

Yeah its the price that puts me off, but the older audios are like £3 each digitally, so I might have to get some, because I've only heard a handful of the audios before.

I actually think I prefer Hurndall's portrayal. It's not very good at all - it's big and broad and a bit silly - but Bradley's just doesn't even feel like the First Doctor to me.

It's more the writing than the performance I think--he does just fine in the Big Finish stuff that's using the Adventure in Space and Time cast, but that Christmas special turned him into a caricature of 60s toxic sexism and I still can't tell if that was meant to be poking at the era of the show, the era of society in general, or some kind of horrid misremembrance of how the character was.

I really like Bradley as Hartnell, but I feel like he should have watched some 1st Doctor stuff to properly get the mannerisms a little better. He does pauses in places Hartnell wouldn't have.

Bradley wasn't doing anything too special in Twice Upon A Time, but honestly I didn't think he was that great in the docudrama either. It was less his performance, though, and more the scripting of Hartnell as starting to lose it during his tenure as the Doctor. It's cliche, and also kind of unfounded. Like I wasn't there, but a lot of that was shot in one or two takes, and Hartnell is doing a fine job with it. I think most of what people take as dementia is just acting, most of the time. He's so difficult to watch by the time of The Three Doctors, but that was quite a few years later.

That Christmas special overall was really hampered by the feeling that nobody wanted to be doing it. Moffat was clearly done with the show, Capaldi was on autopilot, I think Bill was there and it was nice to see her. That final speech reads like it was dashed out on a napkin on that way to the studio.

And yet it still has one of the funniest jokes Moffat's ever written: casting the two runners-up to the showrunner job as opposing soldiers shooting at each other in a trench.

I think it's fine for two different actors to give their own two different performances of the same character (the first doctor). rather than expecting an exact imitation of how someone else played him.

4 volumes so far, using the TARDIS crew from the docudrama. Fair warning, the first set does feature noted transphobe James Dreyfus playing the first incarnation of the Master so that may be something to avoid depending on how strongly you feel about not supporting his work.

Not sure how I feel about this. I mean, I was the one who said I wanted War in TL:V, but I was thinking comics or a novel. On the other hand, I'm usually fine with recasting so we can enjoy stories with older Doctors, and I've whined before about them being so hesitant to recast some of the prime players in Dark Shadows (which is a soap opera and recasting is par for the course!). I guess it seems a bit soon after Hurt died for me.

IMO Peter Purves is the best First, though William Russell plays a better Hartnell nowadays than he does Young Ian!

My current classic re-watch has stalled out at The Twin Dilemma, just like the last one did. Got through Caves of Androzani in one sitting and it's taken me two weeks to get halfway though Twin Dilemma.

It's just so boring, and bad, and the Doctor is the worst in it

Androzani to Twins has to be the worst episode quality whiplash in all of Doctor Who. How can they go from one of the best ever to this tedious poo poo?

I can't pretend like I'm not guilty given I've bought a couple of the First Doctor and Third Doctor Adventures but I just don't really feel this.

Like, if it was going to be something in the style of the Companion Chronicles or Early Adventures then yeah, I don't know that I really need these stories but I like that format so I'd possibly be receptive to the idea of more War Doctor stories told that way.

I just, knowing that the recasting debate is kind of old hat at this point, feel like regeneration is already the show's built in means of recasting and that "recasting" a particular incarnation of the Doctor is really missing the point. They already recast Bill Hartnell, that was how we got Patrick Troughton's Doctor Who

That does sound like fun. I might do that for Star Trek. But I'm determined to finish this re-watch in order, get all the way to 13.

Now made it to Attack of the Cybermen, which is ok I guess. After how terrible Twin Dilemma was I don't really have strong feelings about this one.

OK, so if I'm getting my head around it, the two novels are the main plot of TLV, and all the other stuff is filling in side stories about those?
Also apparently remenents of Faction Paradox show up in one of the side stories? I thought they weren't canon to the main Doctor Who universe, since the Eighth Doctor Adventures take place in an alternative timeline, but I guess that multiverse hopping is sort of their thing.

I could buy him as 'younger John Hurt'. But to be more specific, in Night of the Doctor itself they showed the younger War Doctor, using an actual picture of a younger John Hurt as basis. I know that picture is from something he was actually in, or at least from when he was acting. I know basicallly nothing of John Hurt roles, but maybe compare against, like... Alien, maybe?

Thank you, Astroman.

And I absolutely can buy this as a younger John Hurt. If anything, I'd say compare him to Time After Time - which doesn't hold up as well, but as a mixture of our War Doctor and earlier Hurt, I think it works to show the character versus the actor.
