It's even simpler than that: a lot of people will put up with suffering if you can convince them that the people they consider to be beneath them are suffering even harder. A lot of Trump's supporters are perfectly fine with loving THOSE (i.e., whatever persecuted minority class they despise) people over, and never stop to think for a moment that the same tools used to gently caress THOSE people over will eventually also be used against them (see also: the number of news stories of farmers/factory workers/people married to immigrants/people who believed coronavirus was a hoax/etc. who were all "I never thought THIS would happen to me under Trump"...many of whom have said they'd still vote for him again).
