I'm sure it's already been posted but can someone summarize the reasons for this conflict for those who aren't familiar, please?

In the extreme short term: an Armenian enclave in a majority Azeri region seceded and seized the surrounding areas for itself and ethnically cleansed it all in the process, while both Azerbaijan and Armenia were busy purging their societies of each other in the aftermath of the collapse of the USSR. Azerbaijan wants the area back. Theres been a long history of back and forth ethnic cleansing in the region, but this one is fresh enough the survivors are all still pretty much alive so its alot harder to say "well its past history just forget it", but at the same time the safety of the Armenian minority in NGK is uh....not secure underneath the Azerbaijan government. So its probably not gonna be a great thing if Azeri tanks roll into Stepanakert to get their Hitler on, but the military leaders of the enclave themselves are fascist trash.

So the thing to do as leftists is to root for the Armenians, warts and all, while keeping in mind that there's a large Azeri refugee population that would still like to return some day.

If that Krasukha thing actually works as well as they claim this conflict is the best advertisement for the thing the Russians could have ever wished for. Hapless nation gets owned by drones UNTIL Krasukha-chan rolls in, inquire under sales@rosboronexport.ru

e: if they're for sale
e: should be easy to tell whether it works by checking Armenian twitter for pics of piles of Bayraktar wreckage

I always thought it would be pretty easy to laser or microwave a satellite into a useless pile of junk. Especially a huge one like the ISS or Hubble. It's probably harder to make radar sensitive enough to track these tiny stealthy drones.

If we're advocating fantasy options then I want the Transcaucasian republic back. Short of that then yeah hoping Stepanakert doesn't get overrun is the least bad option.

The Krasukha-4 (Krasuha-4?) is a mobile electronic warfare (EW) system mounted onto a BAZ-6910-022 8x8 truck system. The Krasukha-4 is intended to neutralize Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) spy satellites, ground-based radars and airborne radars (AWACS) at ranges between 150 to 300 kilometers. The system is also able to cause damage to the enemy's EW systems and communications. The Krasukha-4 system works by creating powerful jamming at the fundamental radar frequencies and other radio-emitting sources. The system is manufactured by the Bryansk Electromechanical Plant (KRET).

Iran has these already btw.

Yeah it wouldn't even take much energy or a particularly sophisticated computer to just melt a big unmaneuverable LEO satellite, they aren't really designed to dissipate energy into a vacuum very well. Totally different problem than a ballistic missile.

Similarly, Russia would have had a whole lot less problems this century if it hadn't broken up Circassia and genocided 90% of the population, leaving behind powerfully bitter, impoverished, and geographically isolated successor states to become fertile breeding grounds for radicalized terrorists - happy to take it home to Moscow.

Ottoman Empire, Yugoslavia, USSR, all of these are a case study in how arbitrarily partitioning vast regions with deep and ancient ethnic rivalries was a collosal mistake - once absent the authoritarian imperial regimes which kept internal conflict in check via mass murder and mass population transfer it swiftly turned into axe murders and landmines.

Can you imagine the utter shitshow Turkey and the Caucasus would be today if the Treaty of Sevres had been fully enforced, giving a third of Anatolia to Armenia and restoring its historical borders, when they partitioned the Ottoman Empire? Carving out Iraq and Iran and Syria caused enough of a cluster gently caress as is.

The part of Sevres which is most overlooked is giving huge swathes of anatolia to the Italians and French. Can you imagine WW2 in Turkey? Assuming Italy still went fascist.

They initially said he was only "lightly wounded" (but still needed to be replaced) but then confirmed he died. Based on the video I assume they wanted to pry his arm from where it fused to the vehicle to take his pulse first. But the dude was probably the most important official in Artsakh, and kind of the unofficial head of state, so this is a pretty major assassination.
