Hah, my biggest base yet is totally broken. I don't know if it is because my PS4 can only load approximately half of my environment most of the time, but the animals and blizzards plaguing this planet can't seem to remember that I'm inside a large building made up of cubes, not outside. Sometimes the temperature wildly jumps between +19 and -100 °C just by me moving the camera up or down. It's like my PS4 forgets there's supposed to be a ceiling if I don't look up enough!

The range is the same as it is on derelicts, so pretty short. But it's still thematic for an ice base. A shame you can't paint the derelict stuff.

Skeletal freighters that you could fill in would be so loving amazing esp if they increase the base size. Imagine building some green houses in your freighter that you could see from the outside. Start work for the capital ship endgame by being able to build things like mineral gathering drones, turrets and fighter hangars, a dedicated trading pad, transplanted biomes, and straight up more storage. Now you'll have to make some decisions and you can start working on capital ship missions just like frigate missions. Do you want to be an industry based capital ship focused on production and trade with frigates being your combat element or do you want to be a fearsome battleship that relies on it's attendant fleet to do all the grunt work?

You should be able to give frigate missions when you jump into a new system that would spawn way points and missions that you could do later on so while you explore the planets your fleet explores the system then you could have quest chains making you visit different planets. Rescue a freighter that was damaged and get coordinates to a few pirate bases that leads to a pirate capital ship you can fight which then jumps out and becomes a derelict to explore.

I bought a freighter and I hired a bunch of quality (C, low fuel, etc) frigates so now I have a fleet. The maintenance of frigates immediately disqualified them as a thing. You can't teleport into freighters, so they're the least useful base possible even before the building restrictions. I don't even really need the extra inventory so I haven't bothered farming up the expansions.

This effect flows on to derelict farming, which is just kind of meh given the rewards are all designed to enhance that side of the game.

Just give me large extractors and large bins and a massive build limit increase you cowards.

Yeah, once you have a network of bases you can instantly warp between that's cool if you never leave your bases. Your freighter is anywhere in the universe you want it to be, on demand. That's pretty handy!

Frigates mostly exist to make passive money but when you are already maximally space rich . I guess it's another thing you can shoot for getting lots of S ranks in if you like the color orange, and its kind of funny watching combat frigates helpfully deploy fighters just in time to watch you vaporize every enemy ship yourself.

What's bugging me about the frigate game is that I've yet to see a single four-star or five-star mission even though my fleet is now half S-ranked and almost all A ranked. The exception being the industrial frigs since I also have seen like one industrial mission ever so I've taken to just letting them tag along balanced missions with the fuel-bonused support frigates, so they can at least get some cheap experience. Does my freighter have to be in a blue system or something to get hard missions?

The difficulty rating appears to be relative. You are doing max difficulty missions but because your fleet is so powerful they are showing as 3 stars. If you traded your S-class frigates for a bunch of C-class then that 3-star mission ought to suddenly become 5-star. You’re getting the same rewards either way.

I'm not sure that's right. I've just launched a bunch of 3-star missions and while the fleet rating jumped up to 4 stars thanks to the many, many frigates I've collected, the mission rating staid at 3.

Well, I'm not sure what precisely it's measuring but the mission difficulty rating has got to be relative to something. I run frigate missions daily and have done so for a couple months now. I haven't gotten a mission above 3-stars since my fleet was roughly half S-class. But I'm getting the same rewards from these 3-star missions that I used to get from 5-star missions.

if the difficulty rating really does scale with your fleet... it's an incredibly dumb design decision. just let me send a 6-star fleet on a 5-star mission or whatever, and actually feel like leveling all those ships up was worth it, instead of implying that having s-ranked ships doesn't matter because all the missions are just b-ranked.

like imagine a game where once you hit level 10, all the enemies that were level 9 are instead shown as level 5. what purpose could that possibly serve aside from making me feel like leveling up was unnecessary?

I can see where they're coming from. They are telling you, quite honestly, that these missions will be a breeze for your super frigates even if they are max difficulty missions. In practice it's kinda dumb because we have to assume these are max difficulty missions that our super frigates are breezing through. It would be nice to have that confirmed.

But the alternative explanation is straight up moronic. The game stops giving you its hardest and most rewarding frigate missions when your frigates are strong enough to easily handle them? That makes no sense. By comparison, displaying a subjective difficulty rating is a little unintuitive but at least there's a logic to it even if we don't agree that it's the best logic.

Thundarr posted:

Now speaking of something hilarious, I forgot what "100% bounce back" means after installing an S-class plasma launcher upgrade.

Cue me managing to roll a plasma grenade directly under my own feet four times in a row during a run on a derelict freighter

The best part? Every explosion still took out an entire room full of those spitting bug monsters, so I still made progress, just slower then usual.

Also never forget to put your ammunition into your cargo slots, as nothing is more embarrassing as having to hope you can get to your space coffin before the space monsters can eat you.

This and remembering to only use S-class plasma launcher upgrades without bounce back are lessons to live by.

Are you talking about fuel and repairing the frigates when you say maintenance? I literally just got my first damaged frigate yesterday because i always ensure i'm sending a couple stars above what they're asking. As for freighter expansion the tech and bulkheads need derelicts but the salvage modules are absurdly easy to farm off NPC freighters without any repercussions at all. Always remember you can put 9 global storage containers inside your freighter giving it 180 cargo sized inventory slots anywhere in the universe and the ability to summon exo vehicles on any planet which is amazing once you upgrade a few of them.

The frigate missions are always static with the jump distance determining the reward and the stars determining whether or not you'll be successful at each stop. If you're always a star above the mission you'll have to be very unlucky to get a damaged frigate.

About frigate repairs: The first few times helping out your hapless crew is fun, but then you start wondering why you can't just automate that poo poo.

Then you have all those freighter-adventures shooting green goo and goo monsters, while reading harrowing stories about "infestations" in crew members, remember all that green goo that you always have to clean up in your frigates and get creeped out.

Maybe the reason why your NPC-crew can't deal with that poo poo alone is that as the Traveler, you're the only one who can interact with that green bullshit without mutating into a space monster?

The animus beam you get during the living ship quest is actually pretty solid as a weapon and for mining things that don't need the advanced laser to damage. Too bad you can't refine the soul bits you extract from animals with it into anything useful. Plus it refuels with di-hydrogen which I have mountains of already for making frigate fuel.

I can see the case for having an extra inventory, it's just not something that personally affects me even with only nine slots available in my main inventory. In theory you could jump to the core faster but manually jumping to the core is space madness. It's good for farming relics for the system's race easily and provides another Number Go Up thing to grind but I don't think I've even seen my freighter more than three times in a good 160 hours.

There's nothing to do on a freighter that couldn't be done better by plunking down a teleporter and warping to a resource farm or my home. Having teleporters all over the place kind of kills the whole mobile base idea. Passive asteroid mining or some other function that's unique to freighters would be very welcome.

And its even a better UI than the godawful legacy "click on a square in your suit inventory and scroll through a billion windows that only show 8 things at once"!
