In completely predicitable news: Not knowing anything about music or synthesizers makes it difficult to make anything new and worth listening to on this PO-32 thing. It is neat though.

i started in the same boat (i still dont know much about things), but what i like to do on the po32:

1. lay down a beat, usually 4 on the floor (kick drum every beat) or kick, snare, kick, snare
2. put in some toms or something on upbeats of maybe 2 and 3, just giving it a bit of texture
3. mash in a hihat or similar tiktiktikl sound not on every sixteenth, but something kind of close to that. just give it a lil groove.
4. use one of the more melody-ish noises (bloops) and bang in a little ditty
5. hold record and twiddle the knobs for the instrument in (4) to make it to up, down, updown, or whatever and loop nice
6. copy the whole pattern to another pattern and just kinda gently caress with it a little. the idea is that we're making a 2 bar loop
7. chain the two patterns together to get our 2 bar loop, hit play, gently caress with the built in effects

i still haven't done anything with the "make new tones" thing - the builtins have been great. love the po32. i bought it as a test run for "do i enjoy this sort of poo poo" and the answer was yes. so glad i didn't get the po-24 first or i never would've had all this fun. im sure it's a great little machine but it's just not as fun for me

for me the po32 is for like messing around with on the train to get ideas that i'll recreate in ableton or whatever later. people who are good at things can surely use it for a whole track or whatever, but i'm not good at things so that's a bit beyond me. of course now that i work from home i hardly use it at all but

Dope. I was playing with LMMS but this looks a lot better.

reaper is also free http://reaper.fm/

as for a creativity thing to get started with something, for me arpeggiators are the poo poo.

if you are not confident or don't know anything about musical theory and scales, then i would start looking at this page, just picking something at random and restricting all your notes to that https://www.pianoscales.org/major.html

there's also plugins that take your incoming notes and force them into a scale, so you can just literally smash the keyboard and it will sound in tune

shameless plug: this track started out with a piano patch and an arpeggiator going in random mode based on a chord i don't remember https://soundcloud.com/trent-hawkins/sun-1-nov

tune in and chat! https://twitch.tv/terminalcool https://twitch.tv/terminalcool
e: holy poo poo some terrible driver stuff is going on with the stream
ee: ok seems better now, restarted after a driver install. im runnng the guitar through ks driver and set its buffer to 256, did the same for wdm just in case. lets see if it stays stable

ok, next piece of gear i need - a mic that ONLY picks my voice up if i am leaned into, basically swallowing the mic. something i can use while there is noise in the room. perferably usb. does that exist? i have an xlr mic but id have to route it through the guitar stuff and thats kinda meh, id rather have a standalone usb mic that i can just kiss my sweet lips into

you're looking for a cardioid or a shotgun mic. run the gain real low on it and it should do the job

wait, is there a standalone plugin or something I can use with my daw, fl studio, so I don't have to install reaper?

Also, I think vb meteer has some networking audio sending capability, but that might just be for lan

JamTaba should work

Cockos themselves also offer a standalone client (under "Very Old, Original, and Obsolete NINJAM Clients") but it hasn't been updated since 2005

yeah jamtaba is what I use in ableton live.

I think ninjam is really great for having a no pressure jam with someone over the internet. chances are that if you do electronic music then it’s loops and repetitive patterns anyway so it fits really neatly in the syncing paradigm

plus you get to jam out at home when you know your sound and gear is familiar too

most microphones do not have gain pots. you are supposed to set the gain from your audio interface and normally that is a physical knob on the unit

Ruffian Price

If it's a USB mic, you are setting the gain from your audio interface :ssh:

i have an xlr and a mixer but its all the way clear across the room and :effort:

ive been letting the usb mic run and just kinda watching the levels it picks up and its pretty good, i have music playing and its not really picking it up so it seems decent at occluding the room noise i wanted it to occlude

For xmas my bro and his wife got me a Eurorack module in kit form, and my parents got me a soldering iron lol. I haven't soldered anything since Design & Technology classes at secondary school when I was 13, so I watched a bunch of YouTubes about soldering and whatnot and...

holy crap this thing actually works! Was so cool to turn on the power and see it flicker into life, and it's a really neat module too. Was so much fun to build, and way easier than I thought it would be, I'm definitely gonna be getting kits a lot more from now on. Might even save some money if I don't kill too many.
