Referring to Hispanic Americans as ‘Latin’ will make it way more confusing for historians studying the development of the Tejano Empire from a collection of isolated city states into a global hegemon following the Queso Wars.

 if wine was really that cheap it wouldn't leave the country. Also why would you dump in a country that has no competing industry to kill. No one is going to mistake Biju for grape wine unless it was a forgery(Yes this happened with beer). I am expecting blow back with forgeries and maybe some poisonings.

Didnt china used to have grape wine but it fell out of favor with the revolution and Biju become the drink of the people?

I thought China had a good relationship with australia

Australia/China war/feud has been going for years, much longer than most realise. You have had repeated computer attacks. Chinese overseas students attacking people on campus. Literal Chinese spies/agents they have arrested around mid year. CCP mother fuckers pretending to be police to intimidate people. I am sure if I do a Google there will be a handy article listing the poo poo on the first page.

The Aussies have had some ugly misses here and there like when they accused an MP as an CCP stooge and not a citizen with literally nothing but her being Asian. iirc she is second generation, probably wrong but she is completely innocent. I think there was someone else who was guilty that had to quit. This was in this weird time where they were arguing who was qualified to be a MP due to some weird technical wording, it was dumb AF but they worked it out.

The US Commerce Department has halted a ban on TikTok that was due to come into effect on Thursday night.

The order would have prevented the app from being downloaded in the US.

The Commerce Department delayed the ban "pending further legal developments," citing a Philadelphia court ruling from September where three prominent TikTokers had argued the app should be allowed to operate in America.

Donald Trump tentatively supported the deal. However on Tuesday TikTok said it had had no feedback from the US government in two months.

I guess he forgot.

Yeah, nah. He was playing games to score points for the election. Everything he does is for immediate profit, ego boost and as a fascist wannabe he needs a scapegoat. He also forgot.

If anyone wants any more lols at Alejandro Cao de Benos I would also recommend the older documentary Friends of Kim where he takes a group of visitors to North Korea. He eventually decides he doesn't like the way an ABC cameraman in the group is filming the trip and breaks into his hotel room and steals his tapes, and the guy, an experienced journalist, is wigged out about it to the point that he debates fleeing to the Swedish Embassy and seeking asylum.

I went to school in CA and the term I would see around campus was Chicano. Like Chicano studies and clubs etc.

I went back to see if schools still have that term and alot of the California schools now use Chicana/o along with one spotting of latinx.

I think its people trying to have a term that means "not white" well kinda since hispanic is considered white. I had the census dude go over that with me.

How ever I am gonna agree with you that lumping very different groups into the same monolithic blocks is stupid.

It's because americans couch all their class division in racism, so if you're poor it's because you're black.

The thing is that it only makes sense as a construct to play into American racial science. There are a lot of people in "Latin" America who would otherwise be considered white or black in America. Trying to work a language relation into a physiological taxonomy is dumb. The mestizo populations in America needing an identity in our anglo racial science obsessed culture runs directly in opposition to the larger considerations. Nobody in "Latin" American countries uses latinx, and they never will. Hell, calling the wrong Brazilian any form of "latin" is a good way to get your rear end beat for daring to group them with Spanish speaking new worlders. It's all very well and good that we're seeking to take care of our own, but in the process of doing so I'm seeing a lot of Americans neglect the fact that this poo poo ends at the border.

The whole thing is very much an American thing, and our friends down south tend to not like it when you force American (especially heavily anglo-influenced, which this is) culture on them.

Whilst everyone is discussing "latin" America, I have a potentially racist question.

I always thought Latin America was Central America. Mexico, Equador etc.

What about southern South America? Or indeed central South America? Are Argentinans considered latinx? Hows about Uruguayans? etc.

Latin America has always included all Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries in the Americas for me. Feel like there's a case to include French Guiana too, but then we'd have to have a long talk about Quebec and no one wants to do that.

What's wrong with "latin", at least in English? Confusing for iron-age Italians?

(I assume the people doing this are speaking English, if this in in a romance language then they'll have bigger problems than de-gendering one particular word)

Putting X in stuff makes it look cool.

I think X is used in non-gendered pronoun neologisms in english like "Xe" instead of "she/he" maybe? So it could be paralleling that. "Latino/a" still carries the binary 'male or female' implication I suppose.

Anyway from knowing almost nothing about it, I get the impression that it is a word english speakers came up with to talk about spanish things in english.

my impression was always that it was coined by queer hispanic folks that were trying to come up with something non-binary. whiteys def shouldn't be forcing anything on anyone, but i feel bad for any people that liked latinx as an identity for themselves seeing that term just become more grist for the culture war grind.

latino is an american spanish word, which is nice if you want to distinguish yourself from europeans who speak romance languages. spanish-speaking feminists do advocate for making more words gender-neutral, in the u.s. someone came up with latinx (apparently pronounced latine), some other places, they replace a/o with e or @.

A shitty post? This calls for a dance of deduction.
Being Latino myself, my perspective of it is that Latinx was a non-binary term that was put up by upper class Latino liberals, specifically in the LGBTQ community. Virtually zero working class Latinos use it, but don't feel too strongly of the words use.

The fire and brimstone passion toward the word is mostly in the context of the American culture war. American liberals defend the word for being inclusive and sees everyone who disagrees as a bigot, while American conservatives see it as an example of bourgeois out of touch whites PC policing a demographic that they know nothing about, all while American leftists openly mock the word as white liberals pushing identity politics despite the fact the word originated among the Hispanic LGBTQ community that they should have some respect for.

It's a Romance of the Three Kingdoms displaying the absolute worst of each side.

It sort of reminds me when "cultural appropriation" gets brought up in the discussion.
