Garrand posted:Just don't put it up on youtube or you risk getting flagged Could be worse https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/74099/musician-settles-suit-on-silent-piece quote:What price silence? Six figures, as U.K. musician Mike Batt found out when he included a one-minute silence on the latest album by his rock group, the Planets. Batt agreed yesterday (Sept. 23) to pay an undisclosed six-figure sum to the John Cage Trust, after publishers of the late American composer sued him for compensation, claiming he had plagiarized Cage's 1952 composition, "4'33," which was totally silent. In slight defense of the John Cage trust over this quote:Batt credited his piece -- "A One Minute Silence" -- to "Batt/Cage" on "Classical Graffiti," the latest album by the Planets.

This is slaying me because I know exactly where this was shot; I'm actually about to hit up the Kroger a few doors down in that strip mall, in a little bit. For added context: that dude's rocking those plates in southwest Virginia. The city itself is pretty progressive, votes blue, we have a black mayor, city allowed a giant BLM street mural right in front of the city's police center/jail, etc., but still has its share of people with Thin Blue Line and Confederate flag stickers on their cars. Then you get outside the county and there's still "N***** don't let the sun go down on you" signs, like it's the fuckin' 60's. Point is, my man here is making a total power move, getting those vanity plates.

Captain Monkey posted:I’d be more inclined to agree if his estate didn’t sue people who include silence in their songs. As already pointed out, the one guy who got sued (Tory prick Mike Batt) literally credited John Cage as a songwriter on the silent track on his album, which is a loving stupid thing to do if you dont want to get sued for royalties by the person you are claiming co-wrote a song on your album. Unless there was a second musician who was sued I dont know about?
