Feels like Marco is working with some rogue faction of the MCRN. Likely Martian Supremacists who see their power slipping away since the opening of the Ring Gate, as that plot point has been hammered-in the whole season. Explains how he got his hands on a big-old MCRN cruiser (ballparking the Roci as a destroyer), the stealth tech for the asteroid, and is getting the surplus weapons and gear shipped to him under armed escort.

Isn't there a book spoiler thread. It's hard to tell sometimes if people here are speculating about something from the books. Just talk about the episodes that aired here please. Actually the only reason it's confusing is because people are putting the spoiler tag on stuff that already aired. Mu Zeta fucked around with this message at 19:43 on Dec 23, 2020 |

I'm a book-reader and sometimes it's hard to resist commenting with something from the books, but I think it's worth biting our collective tongues. Speculation on upcoming events is part of the experience of watching a show, and (as a book-reader) asking leading questions or saying things with a knowing wink is helping nobody except yourself to feel smug.

Mu Zeta posted:Isn't there a book spoiler thread. It's hard to tell sometimes if people here are speculating about something from the books. Just talk about the episodes that aired here please. There are two never ending fights at play here. The first is that book people REFUSE to stop talking about the books in this thread. The second is that even though the show has "aired" people can't show any self restraint and come into streaming show threads without having seen the show yet and get upset about spoilers, so most threads operate under the rule of spoilering things in the first day or two of it going up.

I loved that cold open. It's a nice little character moment for Bobby and Alex, but also drags out the suspense of just how bad things are gonna get. Amos and Melba owned, as always. I took her echoing his lines as showing just how far off the deep-end she's headed - Amos definitely seemed disturbed by it. "a second rock has hit the planet" - not even hiding the 9/11 analogy, love it. I felt kinda bad about how S3 handled south america getting nuked - it was all done in news reports, and it felt like the real drama was about how the people in power hosed up, not that 2 million people got obliterated. But I loved that handling of it here. It really captured that strange unreality of watching atrocities unfold from a distance. It felt more like the London Tube bomings with the situation developing in fits and starts, especially as you have no idea how big the attack is. It doesn't end, there's no resolution, you're waiting for the next explosion and maybe it never comes. Christ, and I thought the Eros incident was terrifying.

I have a friend that couldn't get into the show the last time he tried watching season one. He wants to give it another shot considering how much I gush about it, but has an easier time getting into hour-long episode drama shows if he watches a random, particularly good episode, even if it's out-of-order. Considering the series is based on a set of novels and is basically all about character development, that sounds like a difficult request and I'm struggling to think of any single episode to suggest to get the hooks in. Anyone have a specific single episode, maybe two, to recommend?

Better be in the first half of the first season because anything after that spoils too much of the show. Maybe CQB?
|
# ? Dec 23, 2020 23:41 |
|
Did he get to "CQB"? That's where the show really came together for me, and it's got a good mix of action and character, plus it's really demonstrative of how the show uses physics as part of its storytelling. It also is too early to spoil all the protomolecule stuff (or unleash it out-of-context on someone who might get turned off by it).
|
# ? Dec 23, 2020 23:44 |
|
I was thinking the season 2 openers: "Safe"/"Doors and Corners" (it aired as a 2 parter, right?) But random protomolecule out of context might turn someone off. "CQB" is probably a safer bet.

Tell him first four eps. If he doesn't like it after shed bites it and they escape with the Roci, it ain't for him. If he won't do 4 episodes, gently caress him.
