I love rats, but they don't live very long and I'm not up for perpetual heartbreak.

My brother in law is now in hospital with covid- he was experiencing it as bad flu and starting to recover, then his boiler broke down. As he couldn't get warm and was deteriorating, a special covid ambulance crew came and took him away. Lovely mother-in-law has sent the family money so they can get a new one quickly without abusing the credit cards.

Additionally, greyhound tore his cruciate ligament just before xmas and hasn't yet had an xray or operation because vets are only doing emergency ops. Some days he can use the leg a bit, others he's completely lame (not unlike my posting) for no obvious reason.

FML as we used to say.

Aren't ferrets very bitey?

I used to have guinea pigs, but now I have long dog so they wouldn't be safe.

I had some years ago and they were soft as poo poo. They're more like forever kittens than they are rats, they're just infinitely interested in getting into EVERYTHING and playing. They do sleep 18 hours a day though and you can litter box train them so they're great. They will 100% find ANY tiny little hole you have in your kitchen cabinets at their level and climb inside to explore. We were refitting the bathroom and the albino one decided it would be fun to go into the hole where the bath drain is and explore under the floorboards. About an hour later she climbed out, completely grey from the dust and then protested the bath we had to give her.

I miss them a lot!

I completely lack wisdom teeth though

So +2 con and -4 wis, bonus to healing and weakness to sunlight, I'll take that

I went to an RSPCA rescue to check out a ferret one time

"would you like to hold it?"

so of course I said yes. It instantly clamps down on my thumb AND DOES NOT LET GO. It drew blood. This is also coincidentally where I learned the trick to make them relax their jaw by 'scruffing' them. We did not take that ferret home with us. :v:

Ended up going to a full blown ferret rescue complete with mildly insane owner lady who matched us with a pair that had been brought in by an elderly fella who couldn't look after them any more. 2 sisters about 2 years old, the albino one was just oblivious to everything and everyone, soft as anything. The polecat coloured on was a little smaller and was the one who would bite you a little if you chose to playfight. Never hard though.

As above, it all depends.

I'm guessing its about the same as a cat then, as long as you don't freak out about it & just let them get on with stuff they soon chill out?

I think the first one was just scared being in a rescue centre with a load of other animals all making noise. Ferrets are pretty chill usually, they don't make any noise aside from an excited little 'dook' noise when they're playing and are just happy to tootle about and explore. We'd get in from work and they'd pop their heads out of their hammock at the top of the cage to see what was going on. If they saw anyone it was a rush to climb out, down the pipe and stand up at the cage door to come see you. After a minute they realise it's bathroom time and go poop in the litter tray and you let them out. We'd play with them for half an hour or so and then just let them roam about. When you stopped hearing the tiny tapping of claws on the flooring you knew they'd found somewhere to kip. Sometimes it was just the rug in the living room, on occasion they'd scale the sheets on the bed and curl up by your pillow (it's never not adorable). On occasion one of them decided the wardrobe was the perfect spot and another time we caught them both curled up together in the drawer of my girlfriend's craft/sewing table inside one of her knitting rings. We eventually started putting little fleece sacks in spots like that so they could just take themselves to bed. Also they sometimes fall into such a deep sleep you can pick them up while they're passed out and they're completely limp. It was a little worrying the first time.

Great pets, very little bother to look after but they don't live very long (~6 years) which is a bummer because you get quite attached to them.

I'm going to be moving onto my own little place in a about a year & am trying to decide on my pet.

My 1st choice is to get that grumpy cat in the rescue centre that no one else wants.
Getting a couple of ferrets is going up the list from the research so far. They look like perfect little buddies.

One thing everyone mentions is the 'aroma'... how bad is that?

I'm used to living with dogs & they stink at times.

Unfixed ferrets are stinky fuckers.

Fixed ferrets, particularly the females just have a noticeably musky smell which is actually quite pleasant, it's weird. You could smell them like 12" from the cage but outside of that they're totally fine. You can minimise the smell by cleaning their bedding relatively often and because they love sleeping in hammocks or even in a little pile of fleece in a tub it's easy enough to do and cheap to replace often. I'm guessing people who complain about the smell either had unfixed male ferrets especially (stinky bastards!) or were just super loving lazy cleaning them out. Ferrets themselves you bathe like every 6 months with baby shampoo, any more often and they start secreting more oils into the fur which it turn makes them a bit more stinky.

And you have to get females fixed anyway because if they go into heat and aren't bred they will die!
