baba is you & environmental station alpha guy posts on SA still

some more demos going up today:

Action:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1280300/Steel_Assault/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_1 - The SNES style sidescrolling action game that's been getting a bit of attention lately (I think it was in a Nintendo Indie World showcase maybe?)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1170060/Boomerang_X/ - New Devolver game, first person boomerang slicing action
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1459960/Glitchpunk/ - from Daedalic, top down cyberpunk action game, seems like it's maybe inspired by GTA1
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1069530/Narita_Boy/ - Hack & Slash metroidvania. Warning: has that thin limb art style that people used to really hate when it was all the rage in the 2010s
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1046400/Astalon_Tears_of_the_Earth/ - Here's your widescreen NES platformer of the festival. WARNING: Dangen published
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1286280/Pronty_Fishy_Adventure/ - Possibly a take on Aquaria? since aquaria is cancelled now maybe this can be a replacement
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1423150/Shattered_Ninja/ - if you still need more ninja gaiden after cyber shadow, here's another, although it looks a lil jankier

Retro FPS:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1406780/Viscerafest/ - retro FPS with a protag that seems a little too 'zany' for my tastes
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1483100/One_More_Dungeon_2/ - the original had a pixel art look and this one seems to be pure 3D
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1462580/Space_Station_Sprint/

Adventure/Walking Sim:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1206060/Happy_Game/ - by Anamita Design (Mechinarium, Samorost, Creaks)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1395030/Kathy_Rain_Directors_Cut/ - will have an extended story with more puzzles/areas compared to the original
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1466350/Jennifer_Wilde_Unlikely_Revolutionaries/ - french noir where you are assisted by ghost Oscar Wilde
https://store.steampowered.com/app/795420/The_Darkside_Detective_A_Fumble_in_the_Dark/ - Sequel to Darkside Detective
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1295790/The_Longest_Road_on_Earth/ - by the Nongunz developer. seems like an intentionally mundane, extremely slow experience
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1432340/Loveland/ - PS1 style walking sim
https://store.steampowered.com/app/896520/Stay_Out_of_the_House/ - new retro horror from Puppet Combo (murder house)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1335800/Dont_Forget_Me/ - seems like if Observer was 2D, point n click and not by Bloober Team, so I assume an improvement

Roguelite:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1167100/Metal_Mind/ - seems a bit slow paced to me?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1484720/Dead_Estate/ - this seems more interesting, also an action roguelite but presented in that isometric style of adventure games on the Spectrum VX
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1433860/The_Amazing_American_Circus/ - a deckbuilder where you're performing in a circus??
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1282730/Loop_Hero/ - Devolver game, time loop card-based dungeon diver

Strategy:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/538030/Xenonauts_2/ - sequel to the xcom-like

Puzzle:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1308220/Orbals/ - Remember FarSight? Remember Pinball Arcade? well, after they lost their biggest pinball license they've kind of had to do something else, so here's a marble-rolly puzzle game
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1320490/Princess_Farmer/ - queer match 3 farming dating game?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1360550/Summertime_Madness/ - first person puzzle game where you're an artist trapped in one of your paintings
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1489660/Copy_Editor_A_RegEx_Puzzle/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1135310/Pictoglyph/ - different kind of Picross that is symbol-based (and probably not making pictures)

Misc:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1298950/The_Frog_Prince/ - First person parkour game where you're a frog with an extend-o sticky tongue
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1432910/Godlike_Burger/ - Overcooked type game in space, where you also kill the customers to serve as food
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1266840/The_Last_Stand_Aftermath/ - Zombie roguelite where you've already been bitten and it's more about helping others
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1335790/Operation_Tango/ - Asymmetrical spy game where one player is the agent on the ground (first-person stealth) and the other is a hacker assisting them
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1477790/Lunas_Fishing_Garden/ - sidescrolling island fishing game, seems a bit basic
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1120320/Builder_Simulator/ - from the Train Station Renovation dev
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1113010/Chernobyl_Liquidators_Simulator/ - Also from the Train Station Renovation dev, this one... ehh i could go either way on just from the descriptions and trailer. seems like they want to do a proper chernobyl clean-up game (and i guess it's better than yet another chernobyl horror media), not sure it's within the reach of the ambition of a studio that is most known for a game where you run around a train station and clean up trash and wash the walls
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1421790/Labyrinth_City_Pierre_the_Maze_Detective/ - Hidden Object game along the line of Hidden Folks/Where's Wally(/Waldo) but you have active control of your character to run around giant animated illustrations

ok, the steam indie festival went live! hopefully the games i pointed out above are neat, some of them don't really show up on the front pages of the different categories.

VR is a bit barren this year, and puzzle doesn't have a ton of games. but plenty of action games and adventure/story games in this batch.

there are of course returning demos: chicory, linked mask, jack axe, i'm sure garden story is back. in case you missed them the first time

also, some devs keep their demos up after the festival, but the majority are time-limited

God, you vindictive bitch, why can't I ever have any "me" time

So has anyone noticed the launch of Wobbledogs? I remember first seeing this as a weird tweet a few years ago, and I guess it's by someone who worked on Sims 4 previously. It's the first "serious" foray back into the realm of virtual pets I've seen in almost 20 years probably, and there's not a great deal to it insofar but the nutrition-based mutation mechanics are pretty entertaining, and it seems there's a number of odd things the dogs can get up to autonomously, such as constructing dirt burrows. They have to pupate pretty regularly and only have a life expectancy of ~1 hour, so it definitely seems geared towards playing with the mutations. The dog egg simulation matrix is pretty fun too.

Festival limited demos will redirect you to purchase the game if available when you attempt to play it once the festival is over, and there's no way of knowing which ones will do this.

I also want to recommend Exo One from previous festivals, I've played the demo 3 or 4 times and I'm aching for more. I'm starting to get sort of unchuffed over it not being out yet. https://store.steampowered.com/app/773370/Exo_One/

Tried Loop Hero and it's pretty fun! You do everything but directly control your hero who wanders the same loop while you stack different tiles in different arrangements to affect the board, equip items the hero collects. The initial tiles you can generate come from a deck you build. There's also a camp/town building mechanic that unlocks bonuses and new cards as you gather resources from your hero's expeditions, with the ultimate goal of your hero surviving long enough to summon the boss of the stage and killing him.

Part of the fun comes in figuring out how different tiles interact with each other that the game doesn't explicitly tell you about, like putting boulders/mountains in a 3x3 pattern turns all of them into a mountain peak that gives your hero a big boost to HP and sends harpies down to the path. Looks like the final game will have a lot of buildings to unlock and several different heroes to play, and quite a few levels.
