They come in blind, not knowing much or anything about the subject, so at the outset there's sort of a professor/student dynamic going on. It could also just be that certain guests aren't my cup of tea, but I can never tell if it's that or if they just don't have much to do. I see why RE wants guests, as it adds to a more casual feel, but a lot of the time I feel like the delivery falls flat. JaneError fucked around with this message at 22:26 on Feb 5, 2021 |

I had terrible getting into BtB (and a few other pods) because the stoned, tangential crosstalk interrupting the info dump was grating. Would be better either going full solo like It Could Happen Here or at least reworking the dynamic somehow. But I assume he's mostly doing the podcast to have fun and is getting plenty of listeners who don't have my complaint, so I don't remember what the podcast was, but I tried listening to a random find that billed itself as discussing topics in psychology/sociology where the host had on a serious researcher to talk about their work. About five minutes into the interview, the host asks a bizarre question that gets an audible pause from the interviewee as they clearly mentally step back and ask themselves "is he high?" Five minutes, two increasingly off-the-rails follow-up questions, and a bit of giggling later, both guest and I recognize the host is completely gone and will be lucky if he can even get through whatever questions he's written down ahead of time. Like, go hog wild and all, but I don't understand how that's listenable to folks, to say nothing of respectful of the actual expert you have on.

I've been listening to a podcast called Report This Post recently. Each week the hosts pick a topic and find the worst posts people make about it on Reddit, Twitter, Facebook etc and read them out loud. It's like sitting next to a bunch of millenials in a cafe, and overhearing their conversation about topics of the day. I've been listening to this for the past couple of months now, it's my daily companion while zoning out to video games. I don't really read a lot of entertainment or pop culture news, so this is basically my only way of learning about things like that Bruce Springsteen Super Bowl ad, or that new Britney Spears documentary on Netflix. As I've said before, it's a good pop culture blender.

They were in the middle of a series on the Bon Appetit racism story, when their own racism story blew up. Basically, there was a union organization effort at Gimlet, part of which focused on diversity and creators owning their IP, which at least two of the reply all people opposed, which led to one of the union organizers accusing PJ Vogt and Sruthi Piannemini of hypocrisy / racism / etc. at Gimlet. PJ Vogt just stepped down from reply all, apparently permanently and Sruthi also is apparently gone. Basically the story is gimlet and/or reply all were doing exactly what bon appetit was and people blew up over the hypocrisy. I don’t really know what’s true or whatever, but it looks like a mess. I guess the bon appetit series got a lot of criticism on its own both because it’s not really the kind of story reply all was built to tell, and because some of the specific editorial choices they made.

it all starts here: https://twitter.com/eeddings/status/1361789128006897668?s=19 tl;dr for anyone who isn't following it, the people behind Reply All decided to be just insanely lovely to the Gimlet Union's organizing efforts and before that to actively refuse to participate in diversity efforts (the lack of progress on which was a big part of the unionization push) just absolutely toxic, indefensible poo poo and now their fans are going hard after the guy who had the guts to bring it up in public. they can all get hosed

The gist of it is that they're Gimlet's biggest property by a large margin, which created a culture where they got to do whatever they wanted however they wanted and no one at Gimlet could really say poo poo to them, because Gimlet needs them way more than they need Gimlet. Anyone who's ever had a lovely coworker who gets away with murder because of XYZ understands the power dynamic.

I'm confused. The blowup about Bon Appetit was that the people that drove that majority of the traffic to the network were getting less money and authority than the rest of the site, but the ReplyAll blowup is the opposite where the internet is mad because the people that drove that majority of the traffic to the network were allowed to operate with autonomy instead of being forced to give the less popular hosts and employees of the network a piece of the pie? Them not using their outsized position to signal boost the unionization attempt is pretty lame but if you look past all the people describing a business conflict with the language of relationship abuse it just looks like a bunch of less successful people mad that their more popular peers didn't do enough to promote their shows, which is dumb considering I unsubscribed to ReplyAll awhile ago just because of how much of the feed was them shilling for other Gimlet shows nobody cares about. Regardless, I hope they're happy because driving off the network's most popular and profitable show is definitely not going to make it easier for a newly-unionized media company to remain solvent.

# ? Feb 20, 2021 00:11 |
You said a lot of words and none of them were about pervasive problems with PoC representation at Gimlet, which the Reply All folks ALSO fought against, I think you're missing the point in a major way. Also, one can not be on board with a union drive and not be gigantic pieces of poo poo to the organizers. I don't know how you can read what they did and go "yeah, that's a totally normal way to act that wouldn't get 99.99% of us fired on the spot". If I did a tenth of what they did at my job, I'd be fired and my boss would be right to do it.
|

# ? Feb 20, 2021 00:30 |
Also, when someone gets fired or quits after someone accurately reports their exceptionally lovely behavior, it is not the fault of the person reporting the lovely behavior. Literally that attitude keeps sexual harrassment and abuse victims from coming forward. Exact same mindset. If they didn't do anything wrong, they should be able to either deny they it went down how the person said or otherwise provide some context that doesn't make it look as bad as it does. But they're not. Y'know why? Because there's no context for that behavior! They were shitbags, got publicly called out for being shitbags and now are dealing with the consequences of their shitbaggery. The only other people who share blame in this is Gimlet management for letting things get toxic in the first place. If they had taken action earlier, maybe this wouldn't have happened. But they didn't, and that isn't on the people being harrassed.

I asked Starlee about it on Twitter and she didn't respond directly, but liked a response in the thread that makes me think that there's some bad blood there now. I liked Mystery Show and the belt buckle episode may be the strongest stand alone podcast ep of all time, but I dunno how sustainable the concept was. There were great ideas but by the nature of the show needing to do original research with no guarantee it would turn out interesting would be hard to justify funding. I mean ideally give Starlee a blank check and accept two episodes a year, but there would have to be big gaps between episodes. Heavyweight isn't as good although there were some standouts like the episode with Rob Corddry unable to convince his family he had broke his arm as a kid. But lots of other episodes excessively resort to content from Jonathan's own life or other Gimlet staffers, or about people with family feuds/trauma that felt exploitative and often didn't resolve.

It's such a surprise to me that reply all held all the cards at gimlet. I almost wonder if it was because it's really the only show consistently puts out new shows. Gimlet certainly had stronger shows in Homecoming and even Sandra. The problem was always that either the creators didn't have any new ideas for new seasons or gimlet didn't care about them any more after (homecoming at least) got spun off to TV. It's really hard to become a fan of any of these shows because they just end up in purgatory. I remember listening to early seasons of startup and that show took pains to describe themselves as not just another SV-style pump the valuation until the IPO startup but I guess they were either lying or changed their minds when Spotify came along and dumped a quarter billion dollars in their laps. Also gently caress PJ I always knew one of those guys was going to be outed as a sexpest or racist

On the final episode of startup, they talked about how the cost/effort to produce individual episodes for most of their shows was too high compared to the revenue they were bringing in. They said the ideal show, in terms of generating profit, is where it's just a couple personalities talking/hanging out (e.g. Joe Rogan or Pod Save America). Reply All was probably the closest show they had to that sort of format with a popular following. If you are interested in a low-stakes investigative podcast, you should check out underunderstood. The recent episode called Jeff Goldblum's Secret Tattoo is pretty good.
