The ghost ship fire was a warehouse fire where a bunch of people who were young and poor built into a housing and small goods workshop space. There's no housing in the San Francisco Bay area that's affordable, so these types of arrangements are common, and building owners look the other way. The whole thing went up killing 36 and wounding two. The entire project was incredibly illegal. You're right - nothing was done, the building owner had patsies, and this is still widely practiced in that area.

that’s bad but it’s not an industrial disaster.

this is an industrial disaster:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2020/08/04/beirut-explosion-ammonium-nitrate/

we used to have those in the 50s and set up international regulations to prevent them. welp too bad we decided regulation is the Devil. I think we are due. not just for the Texas ones we had a few years back. but something Tianjin sized.

I’m saying that having worked 15 years trying to prevent that type of event on the waterfronts in half a dozen places in the US.

I have had 2 or 3 hours of electricity in the last day— house is pretty chilly. I’m just gonna stay in bed for a few days I guess? 3 comforters is toasty.

the txdot office I work in is closed Tuesday and in any case so are most of the highways I use on my commute

I charged up 2 powerbanks for my phone but 1 seems to have failed immediately so my ability to post through a crisis may be hampered:(

I have a gas furnace and gas water heater but without power neither one functions! also the water pressure to my neighborhood is gone because the local utility district also lost power or something and there’s a boil water notice in effect

underground pipes are generally safe, since the ground freezing is a months long process, but if your house freezes over and you forgot to shut off water, there's a real good chance you're gonna have a very bad day

You can usually stop pipes from bursting by keeping faucets slightly open. Pipes mostly burst because of the pressure between the blockage and the closed faucet, so that's what you need to avoid.

Oh there'd be consequences. The ungrateful victims would be blamed because their constant crocodile tears about unsafe conditions forced management to avoid the site so they wouldn't become another distraction and excuse for stopping work. How could mgmt know something was wrong?? Those lazy workers were too simple-minded about forming a union when they should've been concerned for their safety. They brought this on themselves, really.

That was the response by multiple business minds, financial reporters, and think tank personnel here in the US after this:

The power company officials said those don't qualify for rolling blackouts because they're on the same grids as "critical infrastructure", unlike peoples heat when it's below freezing out, which is not critical.

Here in somewhat rural Ohio, I went outside, saw multiple plow trucks, the road is relatively clear. All power is on, so I turned on the gas fireplace and sipped my coffee in the pre-dawn, watching some fox or other creature scuttle across the icey landscape outside. And pet a dog.

Very comfortable, would recommend for those in Texas.
