New Hold Steady good. Continues the return to form since Nicolay rejoined, although I think I like Thrashing Thru the Passion more.

Hold Steadys keyboardist is back? I haven't listened since he left since what's the point

The Walrus posted:Hold Steadys keyboardist is back? I haven't listened since he left since what's the point He’s been back for like five years. You now have two albums to catch up on! I think they’re starting to sound their age though. Craig obviously has always been a speak-singer, but he’s been doing increasingly more of the former and with less energy. They’re also a band with three guitarists who seem to be sidelining the guitars (though I love a good horn section which the new album has a lot of). Like most THS stuff I assume this material will sound better live, whenever that’s possible.

Seeing them up front like 17 years ago was great. Man time flies. I'm not sure if I got wetter there or at Evil Dead Live, Craig sweats a lot

Ex:Re, Elena Tonra from Daughter's solo project, just released a new album and it's one of my favourites of the year so far. It's a re-recording of her debut with the backing of a string ensemble and it's gorgeous and sad and definitely worth your time.

St Vincent has announced her next album Daddy's Home will be out May 14th. https://pitchfork.com/news/st-vincent-teases-new-album-daddys-home-with-street-posters/ Apparently she's said that it's inspired by her love of Stevie Wonder and Sly and the Family Stone. Her last album was just so wonderful. If she tours this album though (big if because obviously), I hope she actually tours with a full backing band. I saw her when she toured Masseducation, and I really didn't like that it was just her performing to backing tracks.

I’m cautiously optimistic, her batting average is amazing even if the last album was a letdown. I guess it’s probably passé to complain about jack antonoff at this point but I really wish he wasn’t attached to this.

I liked songs from Thrashing Thru the Passion, but that felt to me like it was often reaching back for the older Hold Steady vibe, where this feels like an evolution, even if a slight one.
