maybe people crave being connected to a wider culture because american capitalism strips community and belonging from people to better exploit them

Bhodi posted:maybe people crave being connected to a wider culture because american capitalism strips community and belonging from people to better exploit them i think that's fine but instead of actually attempting to be a part of their locality or neighbourhood they lay claim to something they aren't. my family isn't irish and i think it's weird to pretend that they are. there's no tradition that they passed down, no food or culture, the only thing is that they like to say "we're irish" and then talk up st patrick's day. they don't actually want to be a part of a culture, they don't want to do any of the work involved in being connected, they just want the lip service of being able to pretend. meanwhile they'll go out of their way to poo poo on people around them. not every family is like this but a lot of them are i also don't think it's privilege to "stand outside of it" Kenny Logins posted:yeah i try not to extrapolate from "my culture, as expressed where located, kind of sucks" to "therefore all culture everywhere sucks" because maybe mine just sucks and that's it definitely not what i'm going for here. there's lots of great cultural connections people have and proliferate. i just think, specifically, that claiming irishness and st patrick's day in north america is weird. this often goes hand-in-hand with "well the irish were indentured servants therefore black people don't need reparations."

yeah appropriation isn't cool, im just saying i think that's whats driving a lot of it since most of our cultural options are deeply sad and steeped in irony (MLK jr, columbus, thanksgiving) plus we really fuckin love an excuse to drink, any excuse

i live in a land of plastic paddies and olive garden italians. i also get mad when people list like six western european countries as their lineage. your family being irish welsh scottish and french canadian means nothing if youve been in america for 4+ generations and you have no major ties to the culture. but i get it. i hate myself for being half white too. i luckily have a cauldron of bullshit and traditions to draw on since both my parents are fobs. id certainly try to spice up my origin story too if i didnt have one. mine is pretty cursed though
