doing another rewatch of this, and one thing that really surprises me is how early some of the poo poo happens in this show, like Christopher doing heroin, Richie Aprile smashing Beansie with the car, etc

Conversely, a lot of poo poo seems to happen suddenly out of loving nowhere, like Tony's gambling problem and his long lost cousin. Agreed that Chris' heroin use is portrayed well and shown to gradually escalate, which is normally how that works. Also, while I'm at it, reposting to say that Imperiolli plays "high and/or drunk" better than any actor I can think of and never over sells it.

Makes me wonder how much "experience" he has with those things.

One thing I get a kick out of watching the older episodes is noticing how many actors they recycled.

"Well, hey, hello Vito cutting in front of Chris at the bakery!"

The scene where he cokes up and scares the poo poo out of Jon Favreau is great. He really sells it without it getting wacky.

Honestly I don't think Tony's gambling problem does come out of the nowhere. He's shown to enjoy it and as the crunch of the later seasons presses in it kinda makes sense he uses it to self-medicate.

I think my main issue with that episode is less the question of whether Tony's gambling problem is too sudden or not, and more that the camera work is so different from every other episode. I guess I kind of get what they were going for (but then they never do it again, even though the walls continue to close in afterward) but it just makes it feel like you're watching a different show on a sort of subconscious level and it's a bit jarring.

I've said it before in this thread but I saw the reference on the Adult Swim series Eagleheart before I finished watching The Sopranos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU5IMSOzbeg

At the time I really thought it was just a wonderful bit of comedy, just some insert shots of a dude in a goofy jacket with a weird limp and a kid throwing up after something crazy happens. Only after the fact did I realize that the reaction shots were lifted more or less directly from the prestige series and the setup to get to them was the parody (The Eagleheart version sees a character stop a slow-moving SUV - complete with babies in the backseat - by literally using his head, and is more or less fine afterwards.)

Soon.

Weren't there 'ACTUALLY THE SOPRANOS ISN'T THAT GREAT IT WAS JUST GROUNDBREAKING FOR ITS TIME' takes circulating around for a bit? I'm re-watching and can say it is still great.

It is also much funnier than I remember. With one huge exception: having gotten older, Tony's mom is horrifying to me whereas my younger self found her much more comical.

Does anyone know what Monsignor Jughead means? The delivery of that line was hilarious but never understood the reference.
