What's weird is my parents had a book that said "receipts" but they kept receipts in it...

Also, when did the "receipts"/"recipes" etymology lines converge or diverge? My parents have a huge binder which in one of their handwritings reads "Receipts" and for the longest time as a kid I thought they were just being really thorough at documenting their purchases. The binder was started in the 80s or 90s. I'm also wondering about the pronunciation of "receipts," is "recipes" just a simplified form you're meant to pronounce as "re-seeps", and then it got blundered back the other way to sound fancier/more proper by pronouncing the final e?

the p was apparently reinserted into receipts hundreds of years ago, but we didn't change pronunciation.

there's a neat essay on the words here:

https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/recipe-vs-receipt-usage-word-history

Garner's Modern English Usage has nothing about receipt/recipe, which is odd given how obscure he gets with other debates

Oh wow. My Grandmama used to make those all the time. They're very good. They almost never made it to the table in a satisfying quantity cause she and I would snack the whole time we made them. I'd forgotten about those :3:

At least here pimento just meant fresh garden red bell peppers/any sweet pepper. Not the canned ones for cheese, unless you were Fancy.

Those remind me of the stir fries that my parents would make growing up. They were... not good, and forever sullied that specific brand/container of those crunchy noodles

Honestly I'm still mad that my parents would ONLY buy the "low sodium soy sauce" while I was growing up :barf:

Jim Henson totally redefined a lot of puppetry, but he was also really great at making TV in general. He experimented with a lot of effects, and a lot of Muppet things are really complicated and intricately produced.

The pizza and fries are so dry. They're probably glad they have flat warm beer to wash that down.

I spent around half a minute trying to figure out what kind of food the flower arrangement was. I settled on a grey whipped meat mousse of some kind until I got my glasses. It says something about this thread that I was genuinely surprised it was a centerpiece.

Berries That Burn

this reminds me of the "dessert special" I would make sometimes working in a kitchen.

The industrial potato peeler would peel potatoes hands-free, and it had a little nozzle on the side where the expelled macerated potato skin would come out. A soft, beige, starchy blob. It looked like it had a rich creamy consistency, like pudding. Usually, that goes in the trash because it is inedible food byproduct.

Sometimes when I was cleaning the potato machine I would scoop some of the potato skin foam onto a dessert plate and do a zig-zag drizzle of chocolate syrup, spray of whipped cream, and a cherry on top. Then leave it on the table between the dish pit and dessert corner. So many people would stop and go "ooh, what's this?" and they genuinely wanted to try a bite but I stopped them because that's mean.

it became much funnier once the regular crew knew the joke, and they would oggle and ooh and ah at the plate when a new person was walking by.

Back when offices, I would take interview candidates to a hotel restaurant near our office for lunch. They had an Arnold Palmer for $4, or a John Daly for $8. The John Daly is an Arnold Palmer with vodka in it, but they just charge you for 2 Arnold Palmers, since you're staying in a downtown hotel and it's assumed everything's getting expensed.

I made the ground beef brownies. DO NOT make the beefy brownies. It's the texture, you see. The texture is. Wow. It's really something. You ever eat a very dry meatloaf and it's a little granular and sometimes you get an unsettling crunch in a bite? It's that granular crunch, but with a chewy brownie all around it so the beef really has something to cling to. And it tastes a bit like beef tallow smells while you render it.

Anyway don't do what I did and ruin your roommate's whole day. Didn't tell him there was beef in the brownies. He's not okay. Never steal food from someone that will drink mercury.
