i used to rent from this place in calgary named casablanca that had all kinds of art house and cult classics. i miss that experience and that place.

there was a really cool local video store nearby growing up, the kind of place that rented laserdiscs, had dvds a couple of years before the big chains and the more obscure console games the big chains didn't carry. we are 99.99% sure the owner was a bookie who just laundered money through the store, as he was always hunched over a desk in the back corner on a phone while writing something in a ledger, and i doubt he was buying top-end mercedes with $1.25 dvd rentals. he eventually sold the store to a guy in the marine reserves, who was shot and killed in iraq a year later. his widow sold the place shortly thereafter. honestly, the business was a ticking time bomb anyways, as anyone who wasn't a luddite could see that video stores had no future even at that point
