the best thing about masaokis is that its irrelevant whether its a gimmick or not because if it was, the commitment to it would be insane on its own. i say that endearingly and also every person ive dated has been exposed to this series.

The definitions get murky when using terms like gimmick, act, fake, etc. Masao is filming a product he intended to be informational and entertaining within his real life environment. Take a look at sambuca pilgrimage. Its a complete story with a very clever title. I'll not spoil it in case you haven't seen it, but I will say that this video was filmed with a purpose and goal in mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXcH-1UOUYU Listen to the way Masao describes this section of Montreal. You hear what might come off as pointless open contempt of society as he details the commercial complexes he walks past and the organizations behind them. These digs on society seem almost rehearsed, but if you knew that Masao is an autistic lawyer who specializes in North American union contract negotiation, these descriptions become much more meaningful and give good insight behind his own capitalist pursuits. Gotta make that money!

Masaokis made my mom smile for years after I introduced her. She died in December, but she still occasionally watched his old videos. Whoever's been involved in archiving and saving them, thank you  I went to school with Ben in the mid-90's. He was a year younger than me. I remember him to be a genuinely funny guy, and while I can't speak to whether he was bullied or not, I feel like we could have been friendlier. He was also pretty geeky - he played with Hypercard a lot. He was far from a troublemaker, and actually pretty amiable. I understand now that he was eventually diagnosed with a few mental health issues, which he's also gone on to write about as an advocate and a voice. Fitting, since he had a lot of talent for telling stories, which were often hilarious and done on the spot. He was also a D&D geek, and during our Wednesday elective classes, he hosted a few D&D games that I still laugh about 25 years later. I haven't spoken to Ben since about 1998, but he strikes me as a man who has a few scars, but who at his core is still an honest guy.

I bought a bottle of Sambuca this weekend. I did it proper, holding my lighter to the instant coffee, then mixing it in, and lighting it on fire... THere was an awful lot of residual crap at the bottom, though, so I added some hot water to make it a proper coffee, and then tasted it. Worthy for a moment, but, unlike whisky, I didn't feel compelled to consume the whole bottle. This guy is smarter than he lets on.
