On my way back to Los Angeles. I stopped by this high desert shrine on exit 221 on the I15. I'm outside of the socal are so I have to type the uppercase i. There's such incredible Kenshi energy in the Mojave. Models the feel better than FALLOUT NV. The wind really whips like that soundtrack.

Yeah I've been dipping my toes in and out of different modding communities for years and there's always someone trying to play Big Fish in a Small Pond. You've just got to learn to ignore them, I guess. This is what's turned me off of mod-packs and megaprojects altogether, well that and the fact that the quality is usually all over the place and super inconsistent lol. There's a huge Kenshi one called Gensis that I get the itch to try every once in a while, but there's enough about it that I don't like that I just can bring myself to install it. It's difficult combing through the mod list to get the individual mods to install on their own because half of them are abandoned so that the author can focus on fully integrating them into Genesis.

I have that problem as well. Major overhauls always seem to end up being complete overkill in certain areas with extraneous item add-ons and balance changes that the game didn't really need in the first place. For Kenshi in particular I've been pretty happy with Hive/Cannibals/Shrieking Bandits Expanded and either Living World or Reactive World depending on personal taste. This seems to do a good job filling out the game in the areas it needs the most without adding too much cruft.

They're a little OP but not exaggeratedly so, but since kenshi's so drat jank and not particularly well balanced in more than a few regards, it doesn't really matter. Like high quality Cannibal Plate is still very good despite its horrendeous stat penalties, but that just makes guys like chiefs and tenderizers all the more scary. I like it a lot, actually, as it's one of the few times I actually feel inclined to pick a guy to put on taunt and attempt to isolate them. Additionally, like every weapon introduced is extremely good as well, even if some are pretty gimmicky. Way worth it though, I love those mods too.

I installed a giant mod pack one time (blood and sand?) and the best thing I found in it was a whole Shaolin type monk village with masters who give quests for different mastery level robes. They give poor NPCs food and shelter and have a big Buddha statue you can meditate under. I think they also sold badass pets. Very well designed and unique mod experience.

I'm an insufferable writing snob and there are so many mods out there that have bad grammar or just something that doesn't fit the theme/tone at all in their dialogue that it puts me out of the game immediately. The Prisoner Recruitment mod comes to mind as an example. This especially when the game itself is pretty solid with its writing. I have the same issue with Stellaris mods as well.

Oh yeah I'm pretty familiar with the FCS and its various... issues, I'm mostly just referring to the fact that the mods you're getting by picking them out of a list are very often the light and buggy versions of the mod they eventually became, but you've got the weight of the rest of Genesis' bullshit holding you down if you want to get your hands on it. It's easy enough to go in and fix small problems but it's the balance changes, content, and vision I'm looking for. I feel you on the writing though. Kenshi's not exactly consistent or uhhh even all that good in its writing but what's there works for the kind of game Kenshi is and ended up being, and a lot of mods just end up destroying that fun goofiness by taking the swearing, screaming, and made-up-names-for-things way too far lol. Ok, so if you don't have a melee weapon equipped, or if you're in a Stumble animation, you use Dodge for defense; if you do have a melee weapon equipped and not stumbling, you use Block. Question: what defensive stat do crossbowfolk use? or do they use one at all? Can you dodge while shooting a crossbow? Can you dodge or block a crossbow bolt? Just wondering for cross training purposes.

Its been a real long while but I thought it was some insane hybrid system. Projectile hit is based on model intersection of the bolt and the character. Being targeted directly by a projectile gives you a chance to roll dodge. If you succeed at dodge you just play the dodge animation. So you might dodge out of a direct hit, or you might dodge into the path of something you weren't gonna get hit by. If you weren't targeted and just happen to be in the path for some reason, no dodge attempt.

I was agreeing you use dodge but I don't know how valuable it is when it isn't trustable mitigation. If all else fails, just do stuff. I'd they need dodge, they'll eventually learn after you peel them off the ground a couple times.

The dodge animation is straight back right not sideways? Won't help much vs an oncoming bolt. But yeah my little base near squin is hitting kinda a ceiling, I think I'm gonna use it to make strong gear then go capture the dust king and the ninja bosses, use them to train, then relocate to the Greenpeace plateau base spot for crab tournaments and so forth.

Is Toughness increased by the damage you actually take or the damage inflicted on you before mitigation (armor etc)? Does environmental damage work or just combat damage?

Getting hit gives toughness xp, so getting hit more is better, so wearing as much armor at possible so you can get hit more with less risk of death is best. Environment damage doesn't count, neither does the torture equipment. You get a huge xp boost from interrupting playing dead, and get xp per hostile nearby when you do, so getting knocked out by a huge pack of hungry bandits then standing up before they leave is major xp

Being actively eaten, at least according to years of reading this thread, is supposed to be the fastest way to boost toughness. String up the prospect on a fogman pole, let them get chewed on, then rescue them. I've never personally tried it, though. Fogmen skeeve me out, plus messing around in the foglands always escalates out of control faster than you expect.

Getting eaten will instantly wake you up if you're knocked unconscious and not in a recovery coma, giving you the same huge chunk of toughness XP for standing up in a fight. It interrupts the attempt to eat you but also frequently results in you falling unconscious again immediately. With the right preparation and a little bit of luck it's possible to get a pack of beak things to rapidly wake you up over and over again like this without doing any further harm to you. With this method your toughness will rocket into the 90's in literally just a couple of minutes of being horribly savaged. At that point you're practically unkillable because your KO point, bleed modifier, and natural damage resistance are so stacked that the beak things are never going to wear you down into a recovery coma. Eventually the pack will scatter apart or night will fall such that you can safely crawl away with your ill-gotten gains.

I mean it can get out of control early on, but even without any XP multiplier mods, it doesn't take long in the fog lands to train up a few of your guys to be able to take on entire armies of fog men. Training out of mongrel was definitely one of the better starts I've ever had, but that was a Genesis run that added more advanced, harder Fogmen and that may have made the training even more effective. Sadly I didn't get to partake in the 'being actively eaten' training that run, old Genesis bugged the poles and the Fogmen wouldn't eat my mans. Watching Criken use that method on his mutant sonic gang for his play through was pretty amazing though. Pretty sure being eaten by beasts works just as well? But a fair bit more dangerous, I don't think they go for limbs first like cannibals and fog men do. Edit: ^ Welp, they knew far much than I did about it, aha.

I think my next plan then is just to rotate groups of my guys through the fogmen. I want to relocate to Greenbeach area but my guys right now are all in the 30's-ish skill range which seems to be the max i can get off of dust bandits near Squin. So the stuff around my new site stomps me because it's all in the 50's skillwise. Need to figure out what to train on between the 30's and the 50's. Maybe grass pirates?

NB: I'm pretty sure Beak Things or Blood Spiders also work just as well, as does the Peeler Machine; the thing is when a character loses a limb, they learn a huge amount of toughness, regardless of how it was removed. Fogmen posts are just a nicely controllable (well, usually) way to do this. also, Beak Things make great sparring partners imo and they drop tons of valuable resources to boot

Having missing or crippled limbs will increase that toughness XP multiplier you can see on your character stats panel. If you have replacement robotic limbs you can game this feature by removing them whenever you're purposely getting beaten up for toughness training. Also, using martial arts while you have organic limbs will train your toughness even if you're wearing assassin's rags which negate all martial arts self-damage. If you're doing the whole schtick where you kidnap a buff skeleton NPC, remove their limbs, and wail on them while they lay in a repair bed, you can load up your encumbrance and simultaneously train strength, dex, AND toughness all at the same time.

I’m playing kenshi again and this time resisting the urge to make a base so I don’t get bored doing management stuff. I’ve found just city living lets you still make the weapons, money and gear you need with a million times less dealing with management or suicidal AI I think I’m going to finally do an extermination of the holy nation via martial arts. I want to get a squad of fightsmans that can basically take on an entire city which will take a bit but they are already pretty hefty, they only just barely lose to HN patrols now and they don’t need any weapons to try again at the jail after getting healed up. Upon reviewing the respective options I can see that Genesis has that central authority modder nightmare personality that can wrangle all this nonsense into a one sub button experience. But the Blood and Sand collection is like 300 buttons, which is cool because there is a select all button, and like 9 of these mods are just compatibility patches omg lmao this is insanity, but my rimworld brain is ready. Fuckin rofl at least 4 of these mods are boobie mods hahaha

Peeler machine is terrible for toughness gain. Fogmen poles used to be extremely good, but I think that got changed in a patch. BTW if you are carrying robot limbs, then the moment one of your neat limbs pops off you can slap a robot limb on the stump and doing so helps control the bleeding. Yeah, I tried that last night and it didn't seem to work that great. I didn't want my guy to lose his limbs though so I kept rescuing him, he got a few points but it wasn't worth the time/effort. What I did this morning was line up my crossbow squad outside the Tower of Abuse, drag the inhabitants out one by one and massacre them, then pick up Screamer and Plonk. I can't seem to attack them while they're actively in the repair beds but I can while they're free, so I think i'm gonna take them back to base, throw them in prisoner cages, give them refitted Jittes so they have high melee defense, and use them as sparring partners until everyone has decent stats and skills. The problem I've had before now is that all the captives I take either have low skills or starve to death or take too long to heal back up, but skeletons in a repair bed solve those issues.
