Nope, no extra powers or adaptations. People with the power of flight would kill themselves via accidents 100x the background rate of normal accidental death at a minimum. I've never understood why someone would choose flight knowing the dangers of acceleration and gravity.

Just fly at your normal walking or running speed. Being able to go over obstacles or across streets without waiting for a traffic light, or making sure an auto-car won't run you over, would save tons of travel time compared to going on foot.

I have the exact same memory. The same distinct feeling of perfect, euphoric, nearly indescribable weightlessness that I used to be able to experience for brief bursts and now can't. Flight is "pointless" as a power only if you think about powers as means to an end; as far as powers as ends in and of themselves go, flight is the absolute best, especially if you get to swoop and dive and jump off buildings to build momentum and such. I would very much like to be able to fly because I think it would be very fun. gently caress all of that bullshit about ah but what crimes could you get away with et cetera.

Even if you could travel at car speeds then you’re still spending a lot of time getting from place to place. The last job I had a significant commute to was about forty minutes away in light traffic and most of that was a straight shot down a freeway. As the crow flies that would probably still be about twenty to thirty minutes each way, except way less comfortable since I’d be out in the cold, windy sky instead of in my nice climate-controlled car. Flying at airplane speeds (with appropriate safety gear, whatever that would involve) would still be pretty terrible. That five hour flight to Hawai’i is still a five hour flight except I don’t get to take a nap or have a snack since there’s nothing but ocean below me. Continental travel is vaguely feasible since you can land at small towns along the way to use the bathroom but you’re still spending hours on the trip.

You also can’t carry much with you with most depictions of magical flight, and that’s true of most “flying cars” as well. A Cessna 172 has about four hundred pounds payload, depending on exact model, with full fuel, and the pilot’s own weight eats directly into that. Flying cars have to make more tradeoffs than purpose‐built planes and their carrying capacity and range would suffer for that.

Again, you're not using flight right if you're just using it as a utilitarian way to abbreviate travel; if you wanted that, you'd pick teleportation as your power. Flying is a poo poo power if you want to do something with it that isn't flying. Flying is explicitly a power you take for the joy of flying. E: Also if we're doing superpower picking can we not do the thing where after someone picks a power folks pipe up with arbitrary limitations and other bullshit, jesus we're talking about people who can fly through the air, the idea of "ah but you can only do that at your walk speed" how the gently caress does that make sense, can you only fall at your walking speed, do you think folks fly with their walk muscles Somfin fucked around with this message at 03:37 on May 7, 2021 |

Flying cars ended up being one of those impossible dreams where the risks involved meant the concept wasn't viable even though it's mechanically possible. Helicopters are pretty close to what people envisioned with their flying car, but we still use helipads and trained pilots rather than just letting people roam freely with them. Small planes are closer to the flying car concept these days, because you really can travel pretty easily in one. If UberFlights ever became a thing, it would be by connecting customers to non-commercial prop pilots who are currently just Craigslisting.
