The Senate seems poised to approve new funding for science & technology not just to, like, expand our understanding of the universe and improve lives for humanity, but to spite the commies in China. I guess if all you got out of learning about the space race was "we beat the Soviet commie bastards!" then this perspective is a comfortable fit.

Seems like it's very over.

Can you elaborate on your description of Gainey? It's not a battle of the ideologies or anything. I posted a few examples in the thread. Their main disagreements were over police and zoning rules. I think the guy who wants to do less reform to the police, keep the amount of new construction low to inflate home values, and had some bad religious votes (to be fair, they were back in 2013) is more moderate. They are 95% the same and the bigger issue was representation.

I think the big issues that a mayor can tackle are police reform and zoning rules and he is much more incremental on those two issues. Plus, some support for socially conservative policies (that to be fair, are from almost a decade ago).

I think he is referencing it because it was a district that Democrats usually won with 55% - 60% of the vote and in 2016 it was one of the areas in PA, WI, and MI that swung from Obama to Trump.

TulliusCicero posted:"Coloreds" Historically the area was super white and very conservative outside the college towns. Wausau is not a college town. Those tended to be a little more liberal thanks to old white hippy types, but my impression was that even the nominal left was kind of racist in practice. Since the Vietnam War the Hmong population in the region has grown substantially and the white folks haven't adapted very well. I remember a lot of racially motivated fights in parking lots and behind bowling alleys when I was in high school in the 1990s. It seems a little better now, I'm impressed that motion even got brought up in Wausau, but overall it's still extremely white up there.

Trump did a lot of more substantial things w.r.t press freedom. I'm not asking you if you would care. I'm asking you if you would actively defend it, against all the people who would be rightfully outraged by it, like you're doing right now. Would you tell everyone to relax, it's obviously just a joke, if Trump said this exact same thing, only a few months into his presidency? I genuinely would like you to think about that. You don't have to respond immediately. Ponder it for a few days. I know that it's a joke. I don't actually think that Biden is going to have journalists murdered (probably). But I still don't think that it's something that should ever be joked about by any government official. Especially when that government official is funding and supporting an apartheid regime that IS targeting journalists.

He was a extension agent, ran a public radio show in farming for a while, even wrote some farm policy during the Reagan administration. Think like WI farm royalty . Moved away from WI in the late eighties to FL These days he does things like take a stand in his church community and in his family for gay and trans rights. It’s really stunning the cultural change in WI. It makes me sad every time I think about it.

even if the joke were in fact a window into Joe Biden's deepest soul and revealed his deepest, curdling desire to dance in the blood of journalists, it feels like a weird thing to focus on when we can see the crimes happening in Palestine and we can see the arms deal passing with Joe's approval, both just out in the open. We don't need fixate on every off-hand line Joe says in a public appearance to discern that these things are monstrous or need to be opposed, just like we didn't need to watch out for press statements with 14 lines or 88 words to know that there were nazis in the Trump admin

So was there a later opportunity for the pool to ask questions? People attacking Biden not on the joke, but on refusal to answer about Israel, no? Ed: checked schedule, Psaki took questions earlier, Biden is staying way off radar on this. Looks like this is being handled as just another round of the usual letting Israel hit Gaza until Hamas stops the rockets, moral equivalency all around. Biden probably correctly assuming he has nothing to gain talking about it. The fact there’s any pushback at all in Congress is new but it seems to be mostly grumbling? The letter asking for delaying the arms shipment to Israel seems to be not happening. Rust Martialis fucked around with this message at 07:13 on May 19, 2021 |
