It's a real labor of love and the team genuinely takes 3-6 months just storyboarding and getting the basic animations and scripts together. They don't use GW assets or licensed work (they've made, bought, or borrowed a lot of stuff on their own) so they're able to skirt around some of the IP stuff. They've been hit with C&D requests in the past (notably using TTS in episode 30, meaning they've had to completely re-do it) and have been pretty transparent about what does, and does not fly.

Monetisation is a bit weirder - selling Astartes would definitely not be okay, I think ad revenue is also not okay? But Patreon can skirt the line, since you're paying a creator to create, rather than for their content. I'm sure lawyers could have a field day with that, but at the moment I'm pretty sure that's a grey area.

I have no idea what principle of law we are thinking operates to transfer ownership from a legitimate, registered owner to an ip squatter, but I don’t think it works that way.

If I remember correctly from another thread that had the same discussion, the 'protect your ip or lose it' refers to stuff like brand name commodization where everybody calls their music players 'ipods' and if Apple doesn't raise the issue, a court can rule that by now everybody understands 'ipod' just means generic music player and not necessarily an Apple product so there's no risk of brand confusion and no ground for Apple to sue anymore. Also it may or may not be an American thing and British law may be different. It sure doesn't apply to run-of-the-mill fanwork by ordinary private citizens, otherwise every pop author not named Anne Rice would have long lost all their IP because they didn't call the police on fanfiction.net. The universe is supposed to be vast, dark and full of mystery. They picked up Sodaz now as well this week, with all their content being removed. Pretty sure they just hand them a premade announcement by now because the one posted is I think the same to the others I've seen before. But I guess we'll see it reuploaded to the WarCom site in six months time with some edits made to them.

I rewatched it again last night and I enjoyed the ending a bit more than when it was released. I was originally expecting more of the known universe he hadn't done yet, but I can appreciate an artist adding his own thing. But now I want to know more about how those two dudes were bigger than Space Marines, and how they had what looked like maybe 100 more head implant units sitting in storage. You do hear the alien orb speak a bit, did anyone ever decipher everything that was said?

Infringement is infringement, all those disclaimers prove is that you know you are infringing trademarks or copyright. (Not a IP lawyer but I've had to work with them in the past) Trademarks and Copyrights are not the same thing. Trademarks are intended to protect consumers by identifying genuine products from a given producer. Like the word coca-cola in it's specific cursive typeface is a trademark, or the Warhammer 40k Logo. Trademarks must be registered to be enforceable. Trademarks must be defended or they risk becoming public domain (Xerox and Kleenex are examples of undefended trademarks that became public domain). Copyright is intended to protect the content creators from having their work used (or profited upon) without their permission. Everything created for Warhammer by Games Workshop is copywritten automatically upon creation(at least in most of the western world). There are some caveats though, fair use and parody law are exceptions to copyright (Text to Speech likely falls under parody). Although there is no requirement to enforce your copyright, if you do not protect it against derivative works (that do not fall into fair use), you risk someone else being able to claim copyright on their content that is based on yours. Disclaimers about fan work or not for profit etc. are largely worthless in this regard. There are a number of legal work arounds available to a company to allow fan productions to continue while maintaining copyright of their content, but few companies choose to do that or do it very rarely. GW has chosen to scoop these producers up and adopt their content for their own, which is one way to do it.

It's what happened to the guy who does the One Man Star Wars show too. Lucasfilm asked him to put it on for them at an event prior to the Disney buy out and then basically after the performance he got to meet a bunch of company bigwigs and some lawyer said "that's a really great show! If you want to keep doing it we'll be taking 20%" and that was that.

Is there a sort of "Intro to Age of Sigmar" type audiobook? I liked Dark Harvest (which, along the Cursed City fiasco, made me realize that I want to know more about AoS) but I know next-to-nothing about the setting.
