One of the main characters is 12- he's not really incompetent but some of the only slightly older officers are- and there's a couple even younger kids in the background; the only impressment we actually see is picking up survivors of a raided whaler but Mautrin refers to it a few times

Anyway, all the old Batman, Batman Beyond, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited cartoons are all on HBO Max.

Also Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

So if you're into all of that, HBO Max is a worthy investment.

I love how at the end of the film, when he realizes the French commander has escaped, he's all excited and happy at getting to match wits against the dude again instead of just handing him over to hang. This despite the super sad scene of the cabin boy losing his arm not twenty minutes earlier. It was a pretty big tonal whiplash moment for me when I watched it the first time.

HELL SERPENT
Lipstick Apathy
Watched a couple of movies over the weekend

___

"Those Who Wish Me Dead" with Angelina Jolie is a fun movie that reminds me a lot of the original Shooter film with Mark Wahlberg in theme and feeling. It's a good action movie that I'd recommend.

___

"Enola Holmes" is a huge mess.

It turns Mycroft into this guy that's supposed to be at least as, if not even more intelligent than Sherlock is, with the flaw that he works for The Man, and just takes the latter part of it with none of the texturing of the former. In this movie he's just a moustache-twirling bastard of an archconservative with no redeeming value.

The movie itself explores themes of feminism, social change, and the deep state's efforts to repress women's suffrage, but it ultimately descends into this liberal scolding against radicalism and puts the onus on calm, measured reform obtained via the House of loving Lords as the real way to Get Things Done. It's also quite misleading by giving the impression that women managed to acquire the vote within the 19th century if you view the film as a semi-historical account, when in reality the UK only acquired large-scale women's enfranchisement by at least 1918 (8.4 million women, over 30, with property qualifications), or 1928 for near-full enfranchisement (anyone over 21, same terms as men).

I'm willing to give the movie a lot of leeway in trying to portray women as already being as liberal (if not outright socialist) as they were in the late 1800s, because I'm sure such people existed, even as a pastiche, but what the movie actually does with the material just ends up being hardly better than a Victorian version of Fight Song.

I have a kind of alacrity in sinking.

Just finished Army off the Dead. That movie's got some problems. Spoilers to follow.

I mostly watched it to see Bautista in a leading, non-comedic role, and while he's not terrible he struggles at times. Just about everyone around him carries him through his scenes. He tends to play things large, which works a lot better in comedy than in this. The way the movie just completely wastes Ana de la Reguera is downright criminal - she barely does anything.

The dialogue is atrocious. Just embarrassingly bad at parts; I don't think a single character gets away without engaging in some cliche, and most have scenes where they just stop talking like human beings entirely. The billionaire dude is probably the worst at this, and I get I'm supposed to think he's eccentric, but for me it just comes across as cringe-worthy.

The worldbuilding falls apart in one point for me; specifically, if the Vegas is where the zombie threat emerged, and it was walled off and contained, how does a character like Guzman make any sense? A social media star who goes around killing zombies, and yet it's pretty obvious he's never been to Vegas before. It's possible I missed something, but if there were other outbreaks it weakens the impact of the ending.

I'd say the twist that the billionaire doesn't care about his money but just wants a zombie head for research was half-baked, mostly because if he doesn't care one way or the other why does he need the team killed off? In fact, why not just hire a team to get the zombie head directly? But I'll give that a pass since he's a billionaire and I can believe he'd just want them offed for spite's sake. It doesn't really explain what happened to the other teams though, unless Dieter was telling the truth when he said he didn't know anything about the previous teams.

Why didn't Geeta and the other women try to escape? They weren't locked up or restrained in any way, and for a while the Olympus seemed mostly empty. I get they're scared, but it's pretty obvious they're living on borrowed time so you'd think they'd at least make some kind of attempt rather than wait for someone with a gun to show up and rescue them, particularly given they know they've got a nuclear-based time limit to make it out. I just would have appreciated it if there were some kind of barrier there they were unable to overcome themselves.

And after all that, Kate doesn't even manage to save Geeta? What a waste of time that b-plot turned out to be.

All that said, there were some redeeming qualities. Some of the fight scenes are decent, with probably the best being Chambers' (I legitimately didn't know how that one was going to play out - Snyder managed to keep me guessing right up until the end of the scene), and I liked the bromance that developed between Vanderohe and the German dude. I'll also give props to the presidential announcements, which made me laugh out loud at one point.

I could be remembering wrong but I think Carradine and Keitel were the only American actors and/or the only actors that did not adopt the British accent as a stand in for French. I think it suits the movie well. It accentuates the contrast between their relationship and the constant upheaval in the movie's backdrop.

I know Romero had one more Living Dead movie to wrap it all up (Twilight of the Dead) and his wife is working on it. I'd laugh if Synder gets allowed to do it. It'd be awful.

Audition is something alright. It's the only picture where I've had to leave the theatre briefly because it was just too much. A good movie? Not sure, but it's extraordinary.

Re Duellists talk, is it implied that just after the final scene, Keitel's character jumps to his death? It doesn't change the ending in any way, but I think I recall reading an essay that said that.
