working age populstion in decline and increasing retirees taking up larger portion of pop; shrinking young (~10% <18) age cohort; birth rates in decline rather far than was needed or expected under increasing tech modern industrial economy which leads to birth rates to fall compared to more agrarianism. tale as old as time. basically they don’t want to be caught with a population that is 90% oldes in a few decades.

should add they’ve also become a much larger player on the world stage with increasing domestic safety and ability to import so much as well, they don’t need to worry about most of the concerns that lead to the original 1 child policy being implemented

really though they largely could just nix it and it’s vestigial

If anything their demographics seem to be slowly improving even through there are going to be some gaps. One thing that is also changing is that the ratio between male and female births is starting to close and look like most other industrial nations.

They’ve been trying to sell it for years.

Justice’s big brain idea (from people who would know) was to get the Greenbrier a historical designation and then transfer ownership (and associated costs/liabilities) to the state of WV.

I think this plan stretches back before he was elected governor and his political career might have hosed it

the problem with nuclear, other than the fact that it's completely unsuitable as a transport fuel which is the really dire thing about running out of oil, is that's it's gonna require a certain baseline level of complexity to be sustained.

Assuming you want the plant to last longer than a human lifetime, at the very least, you are gonna need some way to create new nuclear engineers and technicians somehow. Even stripped down to some kind of rudimentary reactor worshipping priesthood, you need enough stability and resources to have a batch of people lay fallow for a decade or so to go from total illiteracy to a basic understanding of physics and radioactivity. In a collapse you will probably struggle to get even that.

Like for the vast majority of human history most people were illiterate farmers with tiny elite being capable of reading and writing. Thats because you needed to have 80% of the population working at creating food so that you'd have enough of a surplus that your 0.5% priesthood wouldn't starve to death every winter.

I mean it doesn't even make sense because "the global south" or whatever the gently caress are busy extracting the world's resources for the benefit of the west, who actually get to consume that poo poo. The classic stat is that the US has 5% of the world's population but is burning 24% of the energy, mind boggling.

The entire thing is like a pyramid with westerners as the hyper brahmin caste on top. If you got rid of the base of peasants that feed and clothe them, then the brahmin are either gonna rapidly die off or become new peasants in short order.

not sure if it’s true or not, but it might be that rural families just didn’t officially register their first born if it was a girl, rather than the gap just being because family’s just chained up abortions until they got themselves a little emperor

i mean idt every little podunk settlement would have their own plant but there were plenty of large complex societies pre-electricity. the Egyptians pulled off the pyramids, i bet some post-collapse empire could dig up some old books and build a small nuclear plant
