Seriously. Dude was the real deal. Jason Isbell covers him often at live shows. His and Elizabeth Cooks' version of Tecumseh Valley is magical.

The TvZ and Nanci Griffith version is still the best though. Nanci Griffith was just wonderful too.

E: loaf & jug is/was a Kroger owned gas station chain.

Willie is obvious, but I've not heard anything about Garth Brooks that didn't serve to better Garth Brooks unless it was in the interest of Garth Brooks (he has an ego problem).

Garth Books started having an affair with Tricia Yearwood when she was touring with him. She was married as well (Bass player for the Mavricks, an awesome band) and her husband divorced her because, "I was tired of hearing Garth answer the phone when I called her hotel room". Garth's wife left him right away and he claims he retired from music in order to spend more time with this kids, how turned out to be pretty angry that their dad cheated on their mom and they had a new stepmom they never wanted.

Waylon Jennings once said, "Garth Books did to country music, what pantyhose did for fingerbanging."

I thought the Waylon quote was about Toby Keith, but now I think it was a Kris Kristofferson quote I'm remembering. E: Kristofferson and keith argued over Toby Keith not being a veteran but playing up the patriotism. (I wish Toby Keith had been a cowboy, learned how to rope and ride, bore his goddamn horse with his guitar on a cattle drive)

If We Were Vampires was kind of a bigger hit on that album release, it's pretty widespread. I love Tupelo. Probably my favorite song on The Nashville Sound.

Also, Gregory Alan Isakov needs some love.

Video is audience filmed but still captures the presence of the orchestra well. Album version is great too though.

I took this picture across the street from Penn Station/ Madison Square Garden about an hour ago.

I 🐙 New York

UPDATE:

Last night I passed by the pole and was sad to see that the sign was no longer there, probably due to the rain.

HOWEVER, as I was walking to Penn Station this morning to catch the train to JFK airport, I saw a short, fifty-something, North African man holding a small wire frame around his face with a handwritten campaign sign for Ahmad Saide, Jr.

I have to assume that it was the man himself. Sadly, I was bogged down with luggage and couldn't snap a picture as he walked past me, but it was a nice finale for my trip to NYC nonetheless.

***

In other Americana/ Reuben news, I had lunch at Katz Deli and ordered their reuben. I know they are famous, but I gotta say, I've had much better reubens. The meat was perfect, but the rye was dry and tasteless, and the Russian dressing was packed with pickle relish.

We did happen to sit at the table where that famous orgasm scene in "When Harry Met Sally" was filmed, which would be neat if I liked that movie more.

And I tried to take a picture of some signed photos from The Jerky Boys, but somehow hosed up and didn't get them. They weren't that exciting, so that's OK.

***

Finally, I saw an old Fallout Shelter sign on a building in Chinatown:

It's been at least a decade since I saw one of those in the wild, so that was cool.

There used to be an auction in Paris we would go to that served some primo Frito pie. One time when I was like ten I went to the bathroom at the auction, and there was an entire turd on the toilet seat. I can still see it perfectly in my mind's eye
