In the past, you’ve spoken about how—and this is my perception as well—the political left in America, the Black political left and the white political left, tend to romanticize these ideas of racial equality in Cuba. Can you do a little bit to absolutely destroy that myth? Because it’s something that anyone who has a lived experience in Cuba has always spoken out against, but for some reason, certain factions of the American left want to keep promoting it.

Yes, absolutely. So this is a major fact and it aligns with what’s happening in the United States with the “critical race theory” supposed debate, how the Republicans are trying to get rid of “critical race theory” in the classroom. Listen to this: Afro-Cuban people, Black people in Cuba, have not been able to engage in their own history since 1959. Since 1959, the Cuban government, the Communist government, has wiped out, off the face of the Cuban planet, all Black political associations, all Black organizations. Cuba before 1959 had 200 Black societies. These Black societies survived colonialism. You hear me? Colonialism. They were completely disbanded in the early 1960s because the Communist government said that it had eradicated racism.

So you can’t even engage in Black history in Cuba. The Cuban curriculum cannot engage in these conversations because it’s not part of the revolution. It’s counterrevolutionary to talk about Black history in Cuba, to engage Black history. Black Cubans don’t know their history. They don’t know about Black resistance. They don’t know about how Black Cubans and Afro-Cubans during the Republic, between 1901 and 1959, were a part of changing the Cuban society, the young Cuban society. Yes, there was racism in Cuba between 1901 and 1959. There was racism all over the United States. There was institutional racism everywhere. But it was a young nation, and Black Cubans and Afro-Cubans were part of creating the most progressive constitution in 1940. It was the most progressive constitution in Latin America. So Cubans, across racial lines, were making strides, but yes, of course we can critique it because we were looking at it from the U.S. lens. Of course we can critique it, but it was a new nation.

Raúl Capote was a double agent – Pablo for the CIA and Daniel for Cuban intelligence. His autobiographical account claims the following: immediately after the announcement that Fidel Castro was sick he was contacted by CIA agent René Greenwald, then on 13 August 2006 he was summoned to USIS and told that a ‘popular uprising’ had been prepared for Central Havana. USIS spokesman Drew Blackeney told him: ‘We don’t need Central Havana to rise up, it’s enough to have a group who goes out to protest. They will have the main media outlets covering the news.’ Capote would then read a proclamation in the name of the Cuban people, requesting US Army intervention to guarantee a transition without chaos. Blackeney outlined US plans: US forces would police the coastlines and control the entry of exiles, they would occupy Cuba for three years establishing a provisional government in Havana with Cuban-Americans and the internal opposition. Washington would create a Commission to restructure the Cuban economy, redraft the Constitution, establish new military forces and bring to trial members of Cuba’s Revolutionary Armed Forces, the Ministry of the Interior, the Cuban Communist Party, revolutionary leaders and militants in general. In the event, the protest saw one opposition activist sheepishly shout a slogan, throw a handful of leaflets in an isolated spot, then leave.110

This has happened before, and is happening again

quote:

The new head of USIS from 2005, Michael Parmly, had continued efforts to foster and unite the small, fractured and infiltrated opposition. More sophisticated programmes were developed to target discontented youth: to use hip-hop, Afro-Cuban groups, artists, foreign students and social media to engage young Cubans in opposition activities. The celebrity ‘dissident’ of this era was Yoani Sánchez, who had emigrated to wealthy Switzerland in 2002, where she studied computer science, before returning to Cuba two years later and setting up the blog Generation Y in 2007. One year later she was awarded over USD 320,000 (equivalent to 1,488 years of Cuba’s minimum salary) in international journalism prizes and human rights awards, despite having no track record and no following in Cuba. Time magazine listed her among its top 100 most influential people in 2008.111

Oh, what's what about using Afro-Cubans and social media to try and stir dissent?

quote:

In an April 2009 cable leaked by Wikileaks, Jonathan Farrar, head of USIS from 2008 to 2011, noted that Sánchez’s ‘international fame . . . fuels further jealousy among the traditional dissident organizations’ and that there is no effective civil society opposition. The main dissident organisations had little resonance among ordinary Cubans, were unlikely to supplant the Cuban government, had been infiltrated by government agents, were consumed by internal conflict and preoccupied with obtaining resources and salaries.112 Indeed, in November 2006, a US Government Accountability Office report revealing how USAID (taxpayers’) money was being spent, recorded expenditure on computer gaming equipment and software, leather coats, cashmere sweaters, crab meat and Godiva chocolates.113

So, what is Black Lives Matter silencing?

Let’s see. Before the demonstrations of July 11 happened, several activist groups had been pressuring the Cuban dictatorship to hold national dialogues and allow artistic freedom and political autonomy. Some of these groups are the San Isidro Movement, the 27N, and the Patriotic Union of Cuba. Their acts included public readings, performances, and hunger strikes. Cuban authorities met these initiatives with more or less the same repression and defamation – portraying dissidents on national television as vandals, delinquents, and “counterrevolutionaries.”

Cuban writer Oscar Grandío Moráguez published an article in Hypermedia Magazine on 7 May 2021, “La desacreditación al Movimiento San Isidro,” where he states: “Many have repeated the term ‘marginal’; it’s a critique tainted by racism that addresses a group of young, mostly Black people fighting the dictatorship from the roots of poverty. Official authorities, mostly privileged Whites, would use worse adjectives to defame them. Mariela Castro, daughter of the most powerful Cuban man alive, called them miserable and chabacanos; the ex-Minister of Culture Abel Prieto defined them as delinquents.”

The rhetoric that journalists, bureaucrats, and politicians use in their self-claimed revolutionary discourse is in effect fascist. The only officially reported death in the manifestations in Cuba is a man whose criminal record was also broadcasted in the daily news report.

Not supporting the anti-government demonstrations in Cuba is racist. There is bipartisan consensus about this issue.

U.S. SENATORS INTRODUCE BIPARTISAN RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF CUBA’S SAN ISIDRO MOVEMENT

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senators Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) were joined by Senators Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.) in introducing a Senate resolution expressing the U.S. Senate’s solidarity with Cuba’s San Isidro Movement, a collective of independent artists and activists who have recently been targeted by the Cuban regime for protesting in support of their right to freedom of expression. The bipartisan resolution calls for the immediate release of arbitrarily detained artists and activists from the San Isidro movement, urging governments and legislatures across Europe and Latin America to renew their support for democratic activists in Cuba.

San Isidro is an NED funded group, I've even seen people trying to get ahead of it and say "listen we get NED funding but that doesn't mean this is a US state department op! we just need the money and don't worry about where it comes from" lol.

Last week, a group of students at Northwestern University in Illinois showed up at an anti-war protest to make a point that there is more than one viewpoint on this issue and that the media hasn't covered both sides.

Northwestern University junior David Weigel -- also editor-in-chief of the campus' weekly Northwestern Chronicle -- organized a group of about 25 people over e-mail to counter an anti-war protest on campus last week.

Weigel said students who want to oppose the anti-war -- what he calls an "anti-American" movement -- should invite speakers to campus and should take part in rallies to get the message out to the media that there is another corner of the debate.

"Being there at an anti-war protest, it may seem silly," he said, "but that has the effect of not letting the media treat it like a burgeoning anti-war movement ...if there is no pro-America presence whatsoever, it's very easy for American reporters to just toe the anti-American line."
