somnambulist posted:

My favorite thing about this is Courtney Love getting mad about it and calling Olivia out because “she did the prom thing first”

Even ignoring things like Carrie, how do you claim PROMS?

Madonna also had an Instagram story yesterday where she claimed she “did it first” because Lil Nas X kissed someone of the same sex at an award ceremony. So so cringey, even if it was a joke (hard to say when it comes to Madonna)

A black male kissing a man at a BET award show is a cultural MOMENT, not a straight woman doing it because it’s cute.

These older acts need attention I guess.

On the one hand I sort of understand where Love is coming from, the sobbing prom queen thing was definitely something she was at the beginning of as a trope (yeah Carrie is a thing but that was sort of the only thing for a long while) but I don’t know how you really claim ownership over something as amorphous as that. Plus in the last 10 years a bunch of young women have started to reclaim the aesthetic of the prom queen/cheerleader on the back of not just Love but Jennifer’s Body, But I’m A Cheerleader, etc. Hole is a part of that legacy but she’s not ripping off anything, she’s just taking a trope that’s popular with her age group and era and putting it in the context of her album.

Kinda related, here’s another artist who probably owes a debt to Courtney Love (but isn’t ripping her off):

It seems like they're shooting for something summer-y which is fine, but I agree it's a bit much. For reasons I can't quite place, it also feels a bit dated? Not in a bad way but I'm getting those weird nostalgia vibes, like it's something I listened to years ago.

And while I'm quoting you.

Escobarbarian posted:

Yeah what's up with that? It had me refreshing and checking other videos to see if youtube's quality selector wasn't just busted and only giving me 480p or something. I have to assume it's deliberate (because how else could it look like that in 2021?) and I just don't get the reference.

I think the best performance in Sour Prom is Jealousy Jealousy, it fits in her range perfectly (unlike Good 4 U which is a much more intense vocal that goes a lot higher) and it’s still got the attitude and her Teenage Girl Stare of Doom

edit: of course brutal is amazing too it could never be anything else

Agree about it sounding a bit over produced, but that hasnt stopped me from listening to this several times per day. Like this a whole lot.

OK, this is not current pop music, but I've had a dumb question stuck in my head for like a week now and I'm hoping folks here can help me out:

Was Paul McCartney's song "Maybe I'm Amazed" like the opener or closer for a big TV show or movie? Or played during a pivotal moment or something? I was initially thinking Wonder Years, but that's "With a Little Help from My Friends" of course.

It was in the credits of one episode of The Simpsons (the one with Paul), not sure if that could be what you're thinking of.

Didn't they actually use backwards masking to insert a soup recipe into the song in that episode?

Yes -- not very stealthily of course. It was done in a way that was obvious enough to be the payoff for an earlier joke where Paul says "In fact, if you play Maybe I'm Amazed backwards, you'll hear a recipe for a really ripping lentil soup"

What a weird career arc he’s had so far. I can’t think of another artist who was a lock to be a one hit wonder who just ended up having staying power because they’re really likeable.

I would say it goes beyond likeable, he’s very good at a lot of aspects of pop stardom. He knows how to attract and command attention, his new songs are all very personal and well written, he works with similarly talented people and as a result keeps putting out bangers. If his songs weren’t good his welcome probably would have been worn out after Panini or Montero (Call Me By Your Name)

I agree. I heard another one of his new songs lately and it was a solid pop song. He’s got talent and he’s working with good people. It’s just such an uphill climb when your first exposure is a novelty song. He’s not someone I seek out to listen to but I’m glad it seems like he’s making it.

Don't quote me but he gets a huge amount of poo poo from black homophobes insisting he's making them look weak and gay. He's sometimes glib but he's really fighting for his life and career and right to exist.
