I would have assumed the Pac-12 was relatively immune from realignment drama simply because of geography; who would the Big 10 want from there?

I am not saying they would just spend money and magically get good at football but having the right coach is a big step. Also the problem I have with your post is that using Maryland and Rutgers as an example of why KU wouldn't go to the B1G is kind of silly since those programs did. Those programs also don't have the basketball prestige either, which I know doesn't go very far in this thread but it is of value to conferences even if football is king.

Even a "good" Maryland is almost capped at finishing in no better than third place. The odds of them being capable of beating three of Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, and Michigan State in one season are slim. The odds of hitting all four are zero.

I think the important thing to remember is that the other power conferences aren't going to make a move right now just for the sake of making a move.

-WVU seems like a natural fit, but if the ACC didn't want them ten years ago I'm not sure what's changed now. Also not sure what's changing Notre Dame's mind about independence any time soon.
-Another case where the Big Ten could've had these programs ten years ago if they thought they were appealing. Brand and fan engagement may matter now more than geographic footprint, but unfortunately these two don't bring much to the table in either column when it comes to football.
-Not seeing much value add for the Pac-12 when it comes to Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. They were ready to take them in a package deal with Texas and OU back in the day, but this is a different matter. Neither is going to really help give the conference any kind of recruiting foothold in Texas.

I think in all this you're underestimating the sense of panic and unease other conferences are feeling about a 16-team SEC. I've been reading that as soon as the Houston Chronicle story dropped the ACC reached out to OU and UT immediately. I think there's going to be a mad scramble among the 3 other major conferences to pick up whatever pieces they can. Are these concerns rational? Maybe not, but it's pretty obvious the entire college football world has been turned totally upside down in the last few weeks between NIL and the OU+UT story, and people and institutions don't always make the "best" decisions when faced with great uncertainty.

Also, with regard to Notre Dame, they have one foot in the ACC already. New playoff structure (whatever it may be) will likely disfavor ND as they can't be eligible for one of the auto-bids.

On one hand Kansas has been good at football like twice in the last 100 years but on the other they finally took the track out of the stadium, and are within driving distance of Pat Mahomes so that turn around is definitely coming any day now

It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

I think there's a 20% chance ISU ends up in the Big 10. Geographically it makes sense, but we bring like no new TV sets, and our national following is small even if the fanbase in Iowa is strong. I think we're good enough at football to compete, and we have a history of being good at basketball, even though we've had a couple of terrible years. ISU is an AAU school, which mattered at one time.

I think it all comes down to whether the Big 10 really wants to expand, and how badly they prioritize TV. Kansas has a better chance since they can bring in the KC market. None of the other remaining Big 12 schools make a lot of sense. OSU is even further away, and doesn't bring a big TV market, although bigger than ISU. KSU brings less than both OSU and ISU, and I'm not sure Big 10 wants to reach all the way to Texas.

If Big 10 doesn't expand, then the Big 12 needs to try and poach some AAC schools and keep the conference going but at a tier below the other P4 conferences.

I mean the last like four years sure but that probably evaporates without Campbell and otherwise you're basically Indiana with worse basketball.

Iowa would also probably not be in the Big Ten if they got to start over fresh now, and we have been a top 25ish program over the last 40 years. I don't really see why they'd take ISU beyond the geography.

The latest ESPN write-up on realignment quotes sources who say the next move for the ACC and Pac-12 might be to try bundling their tv rights together so they could have sway comparable to the expanded SEC. Not sure how that's going to work when the ACC is locked into an agreement that goes through 2035, but that's what somebody said. So if you're looking at how the other power conferences try to respond, it seems they may be looking at options beyond expansion.

Westward expansion is an interesting possibility. West Virigina would need to take a hike in that scenario, but in exchange you'd be forming something that makes some kind of sense. Maybe you still give SMU and Houston a call too, maybe you don't. The problem is whether you kill the mountain schools by severing them from California.
