Fun fact: NASA has huge rooms where equipment can be mounted and put through the same vibrational frequencies of the rockets that will launch them to test for wiring/mechanical issues before hand.

My company runs one of these tables. Well can simulate up to 15000g in the higher frequencies. We test NASA articles as well as ULA, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and the Air Force. This table can rip apart 3/8 grade 12 bolts with vibration alone. The power drawn to operate the oscillator requires its own substation and dedicated climate control. Being in the room with one operating presents an immediate danger for hearing loss. The tables can operate in 3 axes independently or together in specific frequency profiles for hours at a time. The tables are used to simulate transport, launch shock, staging shock, flight profiles and more.

I think we got all the dick waving (Though "I engineer poo poo for nasa" is a truly impressive flex, kudos there) out of the way, so I think we can safely put this round of crimps vs solder in automotive wiring to bed. Here is some more terrible car stuff working on my 86 deville:

The air ride system on these cars has an air compressor in the engine compartment and rear air struts and the supply line is integrated with the wiring harness that supplies the passenger compartment. The passthrough is in the belly pan by the rear passenger seat and you can see here the dinky little white air line poking out of the wiring harness. God help you if you have a leak and you have to replace that air line.

That air line feeds this T-fitting by the fuel tank that splits off to each individual air strut...

Except the air line going from the T-fitting to the driver side air strut is broken. Also peep the captive nut clip that I had to chop up to get the fuel tank out.

Check out the pristine flexible fuel hoses on this gem!

I knew that I'd have to drop the fuel tank so it was no surprise that I didn't hear the pump kick on when I hooked up a battery. I have a new pump and strainer but I'll have to get a new gasket for the retaining ring when I pull the sending unit.

Have some warm comforting opera lights surrounded by an ocean of cream on cream on cream on cream.....

Check out this 80s as gently caress 'digital' instrument cluster.

Here's some fun automotive detritus from nana's garage, which is a terrible thread all on its own that I won't go into here.

Hell yeah

The error and information lights like for the air ride and such light up under the "wood" strip above the main cluster.
The air struts and lines on mine are in good shape thankfully.

There is a mystery connector under the hood that when plugged in makes the passenger side fender make noise but I haven't figured out what it is yet.

I had a check engine light come on the other day and had to look up how to use the climate controls to get it to spit out the error code.

It turned out to be something to do with the a/c pressure being too low and went away at the next start.

Probably something like selection bias. Taking a non-representative sample, i.e. only cases where something has failed, and considering only those or placing a much higher weight on those. Tends to feed in to confirmation bias. You're already expecting that to be the result, and only see cases where it was the cause, so they work together to lead you to an inaccurate interpretation of the data.

We don't tend to seek out causes of something working, only failing. Especially when it comes to repairing things that have failed.
Also I agree that I'd rather have someone do a lovely crimping job than a lovely soldering job. You can hide the solder joints a lot more easily than the crimp connectors.
Reminded me of this RE: selection bias

quote:

Articles

During World War II, researchers at the Center for Naval Analysis faced a critical problem. Many bombers were getting shot down on runs over Germany. The naval researchers knew they needed hard data to solve this problem and went to work. After each mission, the bullet holes and damage from each bomber was painstakingly reviewed and recorded. The researchers poured over the data looking for vulnerabilities.

The data began to show a clear pattern (see picture). Most damage was to the wings and body of the plane. The solution to their problem was clear. Increase the armor on the plane's wings and body.

But there was a problem. The analysis was completely wrong.

Before the planes were modified, a Hungarian-Jewish statistician named Abraham Wald reviewed the data. Wald had fled Nazi-occupied Austria and worked in New York with other academics to help the war effort.

Wald's review pointed out a critical flaw in the analysis. The researchers had only looked at bombers who’d returned to base.

Missing from the data? Every plane that had been shot down.

But the research wasn’t a wasted effort. These surviving bombers rarely had damage in the cockpit, engine, and parts of the tail. This wasn’t because of superior protection to those areas. In fact, these were the most vulnerable areas on the entire plane.

The researchers’ bullet hole data had created a map of the exact places that the bomber could be shot and still survive.

With the new analysis in hand, crews reinforced the bombers' cockpit, engines, and tail armor. The result was fewer fatalities and greater success of bombing missions. This analysis proved to be so useful that it continued to influence military plane design up through the Vietnam war.

This story is a vivid example of survivor bias. Survivor bias is when we only look at the data of those who succeed and exclude those who fail.

I've never spilled more gas than I have with the crop of "spill proof" metal OSHA cans they forced contractors to use in the early 2000s-ish.

For the new crop of plastic cans there are vents you can buy (drill a hole, pop it in) or you still can buy one of the best gas cans ever:

The only spill proof can I've ever used is made by Husqvarna and technically not legal to import/use in the US. It's also super expensive. But it's worth it.

Automatic antenna? That's where it is on the deville I'm working on. I know for a fact my high school coupe had a short in the electric antenna and it would drain the battery while I was on shift at Pizza Hut. At the time I just pulled the fuse and left it up as a static antenna because I didn't have the money or expertise to repair it myself.

It is so cool seeing the antenna rise when you turn on the radio :neckbeard:

Speaking of gas cans, is it possible to carry 10-15 gallons in my minivan without it being a disaster? I would consider carrying it in the passenger compartment if it was 100% smell-proof, but I don't know how likely that is. The extra range would be really nice on some trips.

You can just mount a proper fuel cell (common size is 15 gallons) and set up a transfer pump on a toggle switch to feed into your gas tank. It's more expensive but significantly safer. You also don't have to worry about fumes.

ryanrs
Jul 12, 2011

It's not worth installing a fuel cell for the couple trips it might be useful to me. Just means I have to stay closer to the highway / drive back to a city more often.

That's probably it.

It has some touchscreen head unit installed but it's not wired up correctly and turns itself on and off at random.
I need to pull it out and rewire it at least make sure all the wires are going where they are supposed to.

Re: gas cans. I've been happy with these 5gal unvented cans from Lowes. I do press the release button and slowly remove the spout cap if they've been sitting a while, otherwise you get a nice mist of fuel from the spout if they're full. But they're significantly less terrible than the ones my dad has where you have to push the spout against whatever you're filling to release the gas.

I think I'm just gonna order one of those bluetooth casette adapters instead of messing around with an aftermarket head unit. I'd rather keep it stock just out of laziness and not wanting to source parts and spend the time modifying it.

I was supposed to start my drive from Chicago -> Alaska today, but work decided they'd rather me stay at my desk 3 extra days, fly me out, and pay $3,300 on a Turo rental and $3,500 on AirBNB.

I'm pissed. I'd gotten all the paperwork the Canadians would need to see to let me pass, and had the back of my truck set up to camp along the way. Before the AirBNB rental was found, and I swear it's a miracle it came up last-minute, the only other accommodations were a 3-hour drive from the site. All of the major rental chains are tapped for vehicles, and taking my own was gonna be my way of getting in some vacation time on the back end of the project, on the cheap.

Anyway, I picked up these jerry cans and a hitch basket to keep the fuel tanks out of the living quarters. I wanted to have some fuel available in case the stations out in the bush closed early and I wanted to push on. I don't really have a use for them now, any Chicago area goons interested PM me

Here's their pricing, for laughs:
$72 1.75 gal
$88 2 gal
$110 4 gal

They also have a line of nearly identical blow molded cans with half the warranty for $10 less. I don't know why.
