It is the year 12,378GE and the Galactic Empire has been in ruins for over 3 centuries. But you are not a citizen of the Galactic Empire, you hail from the periphery of the galaxy. A world called Terminus is your home, the center of the Foundation and the nucleus of the second Galactic Empire.

You are a space explorer and you have been tasked by the Mayor of Terminus to collect ancient scientific data from the ruins of Trantor. This city planet (located in the center of the galaxy) was once the capital of the mighty first Galactic Empire, but after centuries of war it is nothing but a smoldering ruin. Bandits and mutants roam the surface, looking for human flesh to consume.

Upon arriving in the system and making orbit around Trantor a mysterious energy beam hits your ship from the planet! You have crashed on the surface of this dead world, and must find the components you need to rebuild your spaceship. However the Mayor is still counting on you to collect that ancient data. For the glory of the Foundation you vow not to leave the planet until you have found it!

You don't just get to plop a walmart at the edge of town, that's only around the midpoint in the game after you've surreptitiously bought up cheap farmland for your site using a burner corporation and put in the political footwork in terms of bribes and threats to negotiate tax rebates and zoning exceptions. Scoring is mostly on style and brutality. Like, if you can get the 3rd generation family-owned hardware store on main street to go bankrupt and pop to shoot himself in despair that's five points and if the widow then has to work as a greeter or cashier that's another five points. Later on you can get to deploy pinkerton detectives for union busting. Hours of fun!

A roguelike dungeon keepery real time strategy tower defense mashup gently caress'emup type deal where you defend a dungeon from fantasy adventurers with a focus on using explicitly weak and lovely monsters and smart tactics set up ahead of time. So you might have a bunch've lovely Kobolds set on a path with poison arrows who will kite them down a hallway than retreat down tiny inaccessible tunnels at the end but when they reach the end of the kiting path a different enemy cuts the rope on some suspended potions that drop down into the pit of rats and send the rats berserk along with the attackers as well as triggering orcs to emerge from a hidden door behind to seal off their one escape. You lure specific characters using 'heat' objects like dark tomes, treasure, stolen artifacts. These determine where the bad guys will go... from there you can draw dark sigils on the floor, build traps and use a system of triggers, tactics and traps evil genius style to gently caress them all over with your lovely skeletons and cultists

Instead, "dungeon" areas that are naturally integrated into the land. You can only find them through exploration and hints. You're never given a navpoint. You might not even realize you're in a temple/dungeon until you're deeper into it!
- You don't ever really reach a point where you don't have to worry about being crafty and resourceful. The best parts of the game are early on when you die easily and have to rely on whatever you can pick up, but unfortunately this doesn't last all that long and before you know it you're basically unstoppable.

Basically, too quickly the game goes from survivalist mode/exploration to "just mindlessly screw around and head in any direction and you'll make the numbers go up".

And a bunch of other modifications, like instead of copying and pasting the same horse stable 20 times, make each one a unique outpost / small settlement.

The trick is everything about ss13 that is good is essentially mods, every server of ss13 is basically an insanely heavily modded fork of a fork of a fork of a fork of a poorly coded atmospherics simulator.

Its a code junkyard, the schizophrenic conglomeration of code sprites and writing that is ss13 is decades of work non stop work by hundreds of people making replicating even a fraction of the functionality a horrendously daunting task for even a full professional team. Hence why its a pipe dream :(

As for why Byond continues to exist? well ss13 is on it.

This is actually how game engine/platforms Unreal Engine and Unity works. The difference is that the people who buy the modules are developers, not players. This and many other reasons, are why Unreal Engine 5 is actually the best game ever made. You don't need to be any kind of developer to make amazing things with it, you can just use it like it's a much, much, much more powerful Minecraft if you want. Everyone should have at least a little go at making something in UE.

Okay its like a big RTS with zoom "levels".

You have the big world map where you do big overarching strategic things. Making treaties or setting policies or reallocating poo poo on a macro scale. 1 minute of gameplay is like a day in the game world.

Or you can zoom in to a region and build buildings, produce units, move whole armies around. 1 minute of gameplay is like 1 hour in the game world.

Or you can zoom in to individual battles and control a single guy or maybe squad leader, and it plays like an FPS or maybe 3rd person hack and slash, and 1 minute of gameplay is 1 minute in the game world.

When you aren't zoomed in AI handles business at those levels according to what you set at a higher level.

Seems cool.

Some of my dream games not mentioned in this thread:

Realistic: A proper Airline Sim/Tycoon which can model demand between cities, including business/leisure travel, customer preferences for timing (time of day and season) and airports, airports in the same metro area influencing each other. Further some sort of weather modelling, want to send a Boeing 757-300 from Berlin to Boston? Go ahead but during the winter it will have to stop somewhere on the way to add fuel adding cost and pissing of passengers. Oh and of course some sort of competition to take into account as well. Asset utilization (should you let the plane wait on the ground in Johannesburg for 16 hours not earning money, or should you send it right back on a schedule passengers don't like?). I would like it to focus most on route and fleet development with some influence over e.g HR and maintenance as well, but with options to delegate those to your team.

Realistic: Thief (2014) but good I loved the setting of Thief, and I had fun exploring the city just stealing poo poo. I didn't like the story with the stupid supernatural elements and the boring, forgettable characters. I didn't like those long instance-like missions. I want to just go around finding creative ways to steal a bunch of shiny things and couple it with some RPG elements, where you can spec into stealth, combat and environment depending on your style and spec it would unlock different things you can steal, different branches of the story etc.

Pipe-dream: The Ultimate Driving Simulator a game where you can drive any car anywhere anytime with a motion rig that can perfectly recreate the feel of the car down to the steering feel, clutch etc, and the road with bumps and leaves, standing water or whatever else.

Honestly just let me find various swords, including maybe a sword with a blade so thin it is see-through and a curse blade that weeps quietly and a sword that is literally a giant slab of iron, and give me skeletons to hit with the swords.

If they want to make the game really good, they can make it lke you are in a medieval world but 2/3 way through you find out it is the far future and its actually OUR world after it collapsed and also have the skeletons make a xylophone sound when they die or have their heads fly off and their bodies chase them. Maybe a horse made out of shadow you can summon that your character is kind to and the horse nuzzles your guy because they are friends.

Perfect game. I call it:

A couch co-op game that is tony hawks but instead of being about skating you basically play as Jackass, each level changes up the mechanics and the focus is on doing ever more insane stunts and gaffs for an audience. It starts out pretty believable like trying to survive going down a steep hill in a shopping cart, dodging cars and the like and ends with doing absolutely bananas impossible poo poo like having a foam swordfight on the wing of a flying 747. You gain points for doing cool poo poo, but also getting hurt in funny ways, but if you get too hosed up you get carted for a while and lose screen time.

Don Knotts : Legend of the Living Weapon

In this game you play as Don Knotts as he measures up to his ultimate catchphrase- "My entire body is a weapon." You start off with regular human Don but over the course of the game you replace yourself with weaponry like the ship of Theseus. Hands become any manner of weapon that will fit, including the body parts of monsters that you rip off in mid-combo to replace your own limbs, fluidly changing your moveset with each replacement to extend your combo. When you're done with monster parts, you can always change your body to a loadout of your choosing from any inorganic weapons you've unlocked. Don's voice is provided not by vocal synths, but instead it's all real voice lines from his work on The Andy Griffith Show, The Ghost and Mister Chicken, etc. Any gaps can by filled by whoever voiced Mr. Bone in Nickelodeon's Doug.

A Resident evil game but you play as Umbrella,it’s a simulation game like Xcom.

Level 1 : you are in charge of a lab and must complete the objectives (Make an X virus, try and keep the lab assistants deaths below 600 if possible)
You must hire mercenaries to go out and get herbs, special toxins, test subjects from around the world.
Then you must make the virus/monster/antidote

Also you can customise your lab with secret doors/panels/weapon stashes and traps for when the heroes come in to try and stop you.

You’d be watching on cctv and pressing the “secret zombie button” or the “big bastard monster button” before the baddies kick your door in.

Oh neat I didn't know about that. Yeah what I was thinking would probably totally omit Stargate space battles as those weren't my favorite part of the shows, it was odd the US Air Force had warp capable starships with transporters, fighters, shields, etc but earth was still at early 2000s development.

What I was thinking would be more from the perspective of General Hammond, without actually seeing what is going on during the missions (although some teams will communicate to ask you to make a decision about diplomacy). Some xcom theming in that your teams would start with basic gear but could get better alien stuff, although there wouldn't be constant combat missions as many would be exploration or setting up bases. Would try to avoid having a doom countdown as at the start of the game hostile aliens wouldn't know earth exists and if they did wouldn't care because low development planets are common, and would only become a threat if antagonized. A possible game over scenario would be failing to provide enough benefits to interest your superiors and the program is shut down.

One thing I thought would be interesting would having a large number of teams with many off-world for weeks or months. If a team you thought was missing suddenly requests the gate be opened, do you risk it being a trick or leave it closed and lose morale as other teams think you've abandoned someone? Would be cool to start off with it only being an Air Force operation but be able to include more branches and NATO allies, and have options to work with Russia and their stargate to run more missions but not be able to control their priorities and risk your teams being blamed for stealing artifacts.
