Dink status here with both of us able to make a living wage, healthy credit, decent savings, etc. The goalposts are just ever receding and at an accelerating rate.
Spend a million dollars for a old shithouse out west to breathe smoke 4 months a year, deal with a house that hasn't been updated since our parents first bought em in the 80s for under $50k, hiding no telling what other horrors of RV level build quality in its bones because it was a cheap poo poo house to begin with. And to pay for it all over the next 30 years? I'm 32, I don't trust this system enough to not gently caress me in the rear end again and again to make the rich richer. I heard stories of how lovely things got in the dot-bomb and lived through the financial crisis in some of the poorest areas of the country. The first bus I posted here way back when was my answer to owning a house was not attainable then, and its not looking any better now.

At this point gently caress all that I'm just need a big rear end shop. But even then, thats looking like a 150 thousand dollar dream even if I built just a shop in places heavily affected by climate change. Nevermind keeping it secure when I'm not there.

I recently met a couple from Brazil in a built out truck and rv similar to mine. They've been traveling the world with it since 2018(with exception for lovely rear end 2020). I learned so much from them through their experiences. With the drastically rising costs of houses I may just go this route too.

I see all the talk about prices on the West Coast, and I've seen the prices in central Ohio go up by 45% since I bought this place in 2007. But there's also the option of going out in the open, especially in Ohio. This city and property was chosen randomly, and I'm not making a pitch for this particular property, but for barely more than $100k, you can have a house on 3 acres. The house is kinda poo poo, but you could make it nice. You're about 20-40 minutes from any real shopping or support, but I keep thinking that I could buy something like that, have no house payment and less than $2k per YEAR for taxes... it's something that I could sustain forever and never work again. What's the down side? (in my case, kids I don't want to disrupt with a move (especially to shithole rural Ohio), and a wife that wouldn't be game, but drat, I think about it.

Northern Michigan is lovely, I've got family in Traverse City and really like it there. My grandpa used to have a cabin on 100 acres in Baldwin, which I really wish I could have bought when it had to be sold - it was very pretty and has a creek so clean you can drink from it*.

Hey at least they're advertising they have nothing intelligent to say.

I live in a city that's solidly divided on that and housing costs are out of control, and this is Indiana for gently caress's sake. But my town keeps getting lauded as "best places to live in America" and "best cost of living" and other things. Plus a booming job market is really bringing people here.

Edit: So a while back i mentioned my wife's ex-step father (divorced from her deceased mother) still views her as his daughter and wants to leave her one of his properties. The options were a couple empty acres in a shithole town two hours away, or the house she lived in when she was a teenager, about 50 minutes away. So she has opted to go for that.

This is ours (or will be in a couple years)

The red line is roughly the property line, there are two houses on the lot, roughly half an acre. Currently rentals, we figure we'd continue on with that until another option comes up.

Edit 2: yeah, probably don't need the address in there. It's in a small town in NE Indiana, that's enough.

I turned in my notice with nothing lined up. Why? I can't stand the job anymore, and my body is falling apart. Yesterday: "you turned in a notice? when?". :argh: I just might not go back, as it is I left early this morning because they decided I never went back to the workman's comp dr after a back injury (when in fact I did, personally handed the restriction list to HR, and my Google Maps timeline shows me at both the doctor's office and the store within an hour of each other last week, outside of my normal working hours, Maps even helpfully attached a picture I took of the work restrictions paper in the parking lot at the dr's office), wound up loving my back up even more while getting bitched at for not telling them I was still on work restriction. :fuckoff: (after telling them I was still on restriction, they told me to just use my good arm to pull 50+ pound boxes down from over my head, that went as well as you'd expect.. then said "you're not in a sling anymore, therefore you're not on restriction").

I like the company itself, but holy hell some of the manglement would leave even Walmart executives shaking their heads..

Yeah and don't forget the pointless loss of life, especially Vietnam: 58,148 were killed in Vietnam, 75,000 severely disabled, 23,214 were 100% disabled, 5,283 lost limbs and 1,081 sustained multiple amputations. Of those killed, 61% were younger than 21 years old.

Another fun fact: The average infantryman in the South Pacific during World War II saw about 40 days of combat in four years. The average infantryman in Vietnam saw about 240 days of combat in one year thanks to the mobility of the helicopter. One out of every 10 Americans who served in Vietnam was a casualty.

Also we didn't lose the Vietnam war, South Vietnam did, the fall of Saigon happened two years after we signed the peace settlement and left because the south couldn't get their poo poo together. The people run out on the rails were all civilians trying to escape the inevitable collapse. So if you wanna say we gave up, sure, but it was more of a result of South Vietnam being worn down and not really giving a gently caress anymore.

I can’t decide if what we are seeing is people’s true colors coming out, or the shocking effectiveness of a disinformation campaign that takes full advantage of people’s desires to not be *too* different from those around them.

I’m sure it’s a mix, as we all know some people are utter shitheads at the core. But for the others, I’m not so sure. All I know for certain is that it’s getting harder and harder to maintain a diverse (all meanings of the word) circle of friends and interests. Especially in the car world, and probably lots of other hobbies.
