Northern Michigan is lovely, I've got family in Traverse City and really like it there. My grandpa used to have a cabin on 100 acres in Baldwin, which I really wish I could have bought when it had to be sold - it was very pretty and has a creek so clean you can drink from it*. *who knows if you can these days, but you sure could when I was a kid.

I live in a city that's solidly divided on that and housing costs are out of control, and this is Indiana for gently caress's sake. But my town keeps getting lauded as "best places to live in America" and "best cost of living" and other things. Plus a booming job market is really bringing people here. Edit: So a while back i mentioned my wife's ex-step father (divorced from her deceased mother) still views her as his daughter and wants to leave her one of his properties. The options were a couple empty acres in a shithole town two hours away, or the house she lived in when she was a teenager, about 50 minutes away. So she has opted to go for that. This is ours (or will be in a couple years) The red line is roughly the property line, there are two houses on the lot, roughly half an acre. Currently rentals, we figure we'd continue on with that until another option comes up. Edit 2: yeah, probably don't need the address in there. It's in a small town in NE Indiana, that's enough. Trip report. Made it a few miles down to the sporting goods store. Truck fired up easily after shopping, swapped tanks, got about halfway back and got some bucking, swapped tanks back to pure gas and no problem. Stopped for lunch. I may just be forced to use pure gas or additives to lower the boiling point. Current temp outside is 85F.

I spent the better part of the day in 100F weather installing a 3-head minisplit system for my sister. These DIY units are way better than I remember. (They chose the system, I just volunteered to help). I'll have to wire and install linesets tomorrow. Given this is 1/5th the price of the quote they got for a furnace/ac replacement, I can see why they went with it for their small house.

It's easy as hell to get a job right now, making about what I make now, and NOT destroy my body in the process. If I don't get something lined up quick, I have my gig economy crap to fall back on for now. Yesterday: "you turned in a notice? when?". I just might not go back, as it is I left early this morning because they decided I never went back to the workman's comp dr after a back injury (when in fact I did, personally handed the restriction list to HR, and my Google Maps timeline shows me at both the doctor's office and the store within an hour of each other last week, outside of my normal working hours, Maps even helpfully attached a picture I took of the work restrictions paper in the parking lot at the dr's office), wound up loving my back up even more while getting bitched at for not telling them I was still on work restriction. (after telling them I was still on restriction, they told me to just use my good arm to pull 50+ pound boxes down from over my head, that went as well as you'd expect.. then said "you're not in a sling anymore, therefore you're not on restriction"). I like the company itself, but holy hell some of the manglement would leave even Walmart executives shaking their heads.. Have another dr appointment today. Going out of town tomorrow for the rest of the week, any fallout from that can wait until I get back. It's just hard to buy one. That has always been me too haha. If my guy comes through for me tomorrow with an offer letter I'll be traveling 75% of the time for work so owning a house would be even less ideal lol. I like my small rear end apartment right now actually (first time for that). Guy at the Subaru dealership here in Austin called me back asking if I wanted to place an order after I called a few weeks ago asking for a BRZ test drive. I told him upfront that I'm not buying it until I can test drive the car and then he just straight up asks if I want to put down a deposit for an order? I feel really bad for him honestly it must be really hard selling cars right now with the inventory situation the way it is... He's a nice enough guy but fwiw the Subaru dealers in the Austin/San-Antonio area won't have the new BRZ on lots until Jan 2022. If my finances are in line and they give me a decent trade in offer on my Corolla I'll do it if the new BRZ is all it's cracked up to be. I'm gonna just buy from the dealer that has a black one kitted out the way I want though haha.

Watching the US fully cede Afghanistan to the Taliban makes me think again that the strongest military in the history of the world is not very good at war. None of us on this forum are old enough to have been alive the last time the US won a war. Korean War? No win, still two Koreas. Vietnam War? Straight loss, run out on rails, after bombing the poo poo out of Vietnam and Cambodia for a decade. Desert Storm? Debatable, maybe. There wasn't a lot of fighting, we just kicked some puppies. War on Drugs? War on Terror? We let the Taliban sit and grow stronger, just waiting for us to leave as we used the country as a bombing range for 20 years. Now we're leaving and show that there was no exit plan whatsoever. We got played so hard. Neverminding all of the failed coups and revolts we seeded and funded in Central America and Africa. The US needs a serious time out.

meatpimp posted:Watching the US fully cede Afghanistan to the Taliban makes me think again that the strongest military in the history of the world is not very good at war. Yeah and don't forget the pointless loss of life, especially Vietnam: 58,148 were killed in Vietnam, 75,000 severely disabled, 23,214 were 100% disabled, 5,283 lost limbs and 1,081 sustained multiple amputations. Of those killed, 61% were younger than 21 years old. Another fun fact: The average infantryman in the South Pacific during World War II saw about 40 days of combat in four years. The average infantryman in Vietnam saw about 240 days of combat in one year thanks to the mobility of the helicopter. One out of every 10 Americans who served in Vietnam was a casualty. Also we didn't lose the Vietnam war, South Vietnam did, the fall of Saigon happened two years after we signed the peace settlement and left because the south couldn't get their poo poo together. The people run out on the rails were all civilians trying to escape the inevitable collapse. So if you wanna say we gave up, sure, but it was more of a result of South Vietnam being worn down and not really giving a gently caress anymore.

I can’t decide if what we are seeing is people’s true colors coming out, or the shocking effectiveness of a disinformation campaign that takes full advantage of people’s desires to not be *too* different from those around them. I’m sure it’s a mix, as we all know some people are utter shitheads at the core. But for the others, I’m not so sure. All I know for certain is that it’s getting harder and harder to maintain a diverse (all meanings of the word) circle of friends and interests. Especially in the car world, and probably lots of other hobbies.
